John SCOTT - Isabella FURNESS marriage 1831
« on: Monday 23 July 18 10:16 BST (UK) »
Hi there.  John SCOTT (mariner, otp) married Isabella FURNESS (otp) 25 Sept 1831 at St Peter's Liverpool by licence. Witnesses were Mary Ann FURNESS and Thomas FURNESS. (from Lancs Online Parish Clerks).  For some reason, their intention to marry was registered in Cheshire and that stated they were both born in 1806.  The couple may well have had a son Benjamin, possibly before they were married (his age at death puts his birth at 1829).  They emigrated to Tasmania, Australia about 1834.

Can anyone please find any information on John, Isabella, Benjamin, Thomas or Mary Ann?

Regards

Doug

Liverpool comes under the Diocese of Chester that is why the Marriage licence is there  ;)  Their age is stated as of 25 years and upwards

Ahh ... thank you, Rosie.  I'm afraid I have no knowledge of the Liverpool region.   :-[

The Licence states  'Liverpool is of the county of Lancaster and the Diocese of Chester'.  I am also useless on Dioceses  ;D   ;D

Did Benjamin also go to Tasmania.  If he was born before the marriage I would expect him to be Benjamin Furness though the name could be changed at any time.

Do you have confirmation of John & Isabella's ages on later documents

That looks interesting, Rosie.

John SCOTT's age at death has his birth about 1806, while Isabella's age at death has her birth about 1808-09.

Another researcher of this couple made an Ancestry.com connection (not sure how substantiated) to Little Broughton, nearby at Cockermouth.

It looks like that Benjamin Furness was the son of Benjamin Furness and Isabella Lowes.  She remarried Gerrard Benn, and Benjamin (jnr) is in the English census, so he's not the one I'm looking for, sadly.

There was an earlier baptism for a Benjamin with parents Benjamin & Isabella c1825 if I recall.

I doubt that is your Benjamin with mother Isabella - no father.  I am still looking for a possible baptism for either of them.
