Help with Arthur James Bown
« on: Monday 23 July 18 17:20 BST (UK) »
Hi All
Ive hit a snag with tracing my Family Tree, My Grandfather Arthur James Bown seems non-existent between  1901 and his death in 1966, apart from a union record we found in 1915 for 1 year

Full name
Arthur James Bown

 Birth
1893
Clerkenwell, Middlesex

Census UK 1901

31 Mar 1901

Meredith Street, Clerkenwell, Holborn, London & Middlesex, England, London, Middlesex

was age 8 and a nephew in the household

Death

 May 1966

Southend On Sea, Essex, England

What we would like to know is where he was all this time? The Family all come from Clerkenwell, Shoreditch area of London and I know my father grew up there until he moved away in the early sixties. His Brother moved to Southend and that is where both my Grandparents passed. We have gone through censuses and Marriage and Deaths, we are signed up to Find My Past are there better ones out there? or have we just hit a wall?
we have briefly tried parish records as well to no avail.

Thanks

Presumably you know where and when he married.

What was his wife's name? (If you have your father's birth cert this will tell you her maiden name - or find it from the GRO birth index by looking up your father's birth. (GRO is General Register Office Southport -- free but you need to register).

Also if you know his actual birth date you could try the 1939 Register, which is both on Ancestry as well as Find My Past (it's simply that the person gives their full birth date on that - so if you know it -- you will be able to tell whether it's the correct Arthur James or Arthur J.

They may be shown in on line electoral registers -- on FindMyPast until 1932 for England and Wales, although these may not be for the entire country.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

There's an Arthur J Bown birth reg. Sept. Q 1892 Holborn Reg. District.
The 1939 register has him living in Islington & married to an Eliza E Bown (nee Day).
He gives his birth as June 6 1892.
There was a daughter born in 1918 in Holborn Reg. District.
Holborn covers the Parish of Clerkenwell.
3 other children from 1914-20 in the Holborn/Islington Districts.
So he didn't go far.
It doesn't look like he went to war either.
1st. positive sighting on the Electoral Rolls (1919) has him living at 64 Albany Cottages Islington. Still there in 1939.
Post war (1946-9) living at 40 Ockendon Rd, Islington.
Lose sight of him after that.

Thank you for this, I’ve searched 1939 census but got nothing, must be putting wrong/not enough info in. All the addresses seem to match info that we have, although we thought other family members lived at these, But family was bombed out 3 times so anything could have happened!
At some point he and my grandmother moved to Southend, I vaguely remember seeing him there when I was very young, I was 8 when he died but don’t remember this event.
Thanks again for this has opened a few avenues
