I'm a little puzzled by this - the Empire did not formally come into existence (i.e. it was not called the British Empire) until quite late in Victoria's reign, in 1876.  From what I can find out on Google, the Imperial Service Medal was awarded only from the 20th century onwards.  Do you have the citation for it, Steve?

I came across my great-uncle's ISM today in amongst all my family history stuff.  It was awarded in the present queen's reign.  It has a red and blue striped ribbon (3 stripes, equal width, blue in the middle).  On the obverse it has the sovereign's head and on the reverse, there is a seated male figure and the words "For Faithful Service."

Here's the other medal that was mentioned!

British Army campaign in Ava between 1824 and 1826.

Ava is a city in central Burma but also refers to the general area of Upper Burma.  However, this relatively peaceful land was not annexed into the British Empire until 1886.
Source of names: The Army of India Medal roll 1799-1826, compiled by R W Gould, published by J B Hayward & Son, London.  ISBN 0 903754 08 8.  (in British Library, Oriental and India Office Collections).

The Army Of India Medal 1803
This medal was awarded in March 1851 for surviving veterans of the India and Burma wars between the years 1799 - 1826 for those who did not receive H.E.I.C medals. This medal was struck to commemorate twenty one notable campaigns and battles some more memorable from the campaigns of the expansion of the British Empire on the subcontinent campaign are Battle of Delhi, Assye, and Ava. The medal bore on the obverse the Wyon head of Queen Victoria, on the reverse, Victory seated, with an olive branch and wreath in her hands, and a lotus tree in the background. The ribbon for this award is plain pale blue.

Hi Annie,

You asked me if he was at the battle of Trafalgar.

Trafalgar was in 1805 and my ggg grandfather did not join the RN until 1806.

Kind Regards
