Charles & Eliza Allen
« on: Wednesday 25 July 18 14:02 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of Susan Cobbin Allen who was christened at Holy Trinity Hull in 1937. She was born in Hull circa 1925, married Thomas Carlton and remarried again when he died. Her parents are listed as Charles and Eliza Allen. He is shown as a Grocer on her second marriage certificate in 1854. Looking at the 1841 and 1851 Census I am finding it hard to find any matches for them. If anybody can help me out it would be much appreciated.

Firstly, welcome to RootsChat  :)

I'm a little confused with the dates you quote - 1937, 1925, then 1854, 1841 and 1851  :-\

First marriage - 23 March 1845 - to Antony Carlton, shows father as Charles, who is a Grocer.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.
He/she who never made a mistake, never made anything.

Appleyard - WRY

Hi,Welcome to Rootschat :)
I did find a death in the Hull Packet 14 Sep 1849
"Sep 11th in the 59th year of his age after a few hours illness, Charles Allen grocer Osborne Street and butler to the late Mrs Turner , Ferriby, 14 years."

The address could be the Osborne Street mentioned on the marriage certificate.
There is an entry in the 1841 census
Low Street, Ferriby
Charles Allen   50  Butler   Y
Mary    "          40              Y
Eliza     "          20             Y

No Susan mentioned but she was old enough to be working elsewhere possibly.
You would presume Mary to be the wife so if it was the correct Charles perhaps he married again

Hull Packet 17 Nov 1843

Occasional Waiter
Chas Allen, Grocer, Tea, Flour & Bacon Dealer respectfully informs the families of Hull and its vicinity that having lived 14 years as a Butler to Mrs Turner, Ferriby, it is his intention of going out to wait at Dinner, Tea or Supper Parties in Town or Country. Any offers he may be favoured with will receive punctual attention on application to Thomas Empson, Hairdresser, 37 Savile Street or C .Allen, 39 Osborne Street.

Hello, thank you for the welcome and all of you for your replies. I wondered if Charles had maybe died, but I think Cathy is correct in saying that Eliza was the one who died first. I did have Charles and Mary on my list but discounted them as she wasn't "Eliza". I have the baptism of Eliza Robinson Allen, daughter of Charles and Eliza, as 2nd Jan,1822 so that could well be them. Susan I did note at Sykes Street as a F.S. in 1841.
Regarding Eliza "Robinson" Allen I wondered if it was her mothers maiden name but the only marriage I found when previously looking was at St. Giles Cripplegate, London, on the 24th March, 1817, between a Charles Allen and Eliza Robinson.
Once again, many thanks for your help as it has given me some new clues to follow up. Living over 250 miles away I have to rely a lot on the internet rather than original documents, although I did visit Halsham a little while ago to visit Susan's grave.

Just as a follow up to the above. Eliza Allen was buried on 5th May, 1839, at Sculcoates, aged 52.
Charles Allen listed as a Butler married Mary Kellington, both widowed, at North Ferriby on the 26th May, 1840.
Susan, by then a Collinson, died in August 1914, aged 89.
      Thanks again for your help.
