Montgomerys and Porters of Grillagh / Knocknakielt, Maghera
« on: Wednesday 25 July 18 14:33 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I hope anyone can help!

I'm currently researching my family tree and am struggling to find information on the Montgomerys and Porters of Maghera (and potentially the surrounding area)

Here's what I have -

David Montgomery (of Craigmore in 1901 census and Grillagh in 1911) Born 1866 - ?
MARRIED TO
Mary Ann Montgomery (of Craigmore in 1901* census and Grillagh in 1911) Born 1865 - ?
*spelt Mary Ane Montgomery in 1901 however I'm assuming its the same person!

1901 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Maghera/Craigmore/1545064/
1911 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Maghera/Grillagh/611258/

They had a number of children - James (1890 - ?) Hugh (1892 - ?) Mary Ann (1906 - ?) and

David Montgomery (1900 - 1953) person of particular interest is he is my great grandfather - I know very little other than he is present on both of the above mentioned census records aged 1 and 11

David married Eva Porter (1910 - 1942) , my great grandmother and another person of great interest - who again, unfortunately, I have very little information on - I do know that Ireland, Civil Registration Births Index, 1864-1958 has a record of 'Evelyn Porter' born 1910 and Maghera Presbyterian Church has a record of 'Eva Montgomery' of Knocknakielt buried Saturday August 01 1942 aged 31. Additionally, Evelyn Porter is listed under the 1911 census aged 6 months as a resident of Knocknekielt, Maghera - I think its a pretty safe assumption that all these records refer to the same person.

Maghera Presbyterian Church Burial Record

1911 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Maghera/Knocknakielt/611556/

The 1911 census record containing a 6 month old Evelyn reveals her mother to be Mary Jane Porter (Approx 1861 - ?) of Knocknakielt, Maghera - both the 1911 census record and the 1901 census record show Mary Jane Porter to be a widow and I can find no record of any husband pre 1901 and is also making me wonder whether Evelyn / Eva's maiden name was even Porter!

1901 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Maghera/Knocknakielt/1545454/

Any information, leads or links anyone can provide to help me find more information on the above persons, including their parents / children (Evelyn for example had a number of brothers and sisters I've not referenced) would be greatly appreciated.

Bradley

Firstly,

All Irish civil registrations are available on  (From 1864 onwards) (Births shown up to 1916, deaths up to 1966, and marriages up to 1941) - however as the area you are looking for is Northern Ireland, recored will only be available on this site until 1921
This site is free to use

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

After 1922, use the GRONI site

https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/go-groni-online

Searching is free on GRONI, but viewing the certificate with detail is about £2.50

And to start you off:
Evelyn Porters birth certificate - mother Annie Mary Porter a domestic servant
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1910/01553/1628111.pdf

So Evelyn is actually a granddaughter of Mary Jane and not daughter as listed in the census
McClean, Kelly, Murray, Higgins, McAnulty (McNulty, Conalty, Kinolty), Morgan, Rafferty, McPolin (All Co Down, Ireland) Bowman, Hooper(Yorkshire)

I have looked up the births for some of Evelyns sisters

Agnes was born to William John Porter and Mary Jane Porter (nee Watterson)
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1897/02143/1813784.pdf

William died in 1900
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1900/05775/4632829.pdf

As Samuel on the 1911 census also seems to have been born after Williams death, I looked for his birth also, but couldn't find it.

There is however an Albert born in 1903 to Mary Jane Porter nee Matterson. (No father listed) so I suspect this is Samuel?
