Sorry, I really don't know whether records can be unlocked at a library.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

BumbleB many thanks for your reply. As you can see I thought I had to use GRO Index on the GRO site and not freebmd for the information. Thankyou for guiding me much appreciated.
On the 1939 Registers can I unlock the household at my library on Find My Past? I have not used these 1939 Registers before.

If your local library has access to either Ancestry or Find My Past yes you can view the household or "unlock" it this means you can view records that are open. You won't be able to view the one closed record you mentioned. This closed record will be open at some point in the future when the death of the person is proven or after the 100 year time limit is reached.

Thank you Blue for taking the time to reply. I will visit my local Library on Monday to look at the 1939 Registers. I have not done this research before so I am grateful for the help

I usually take a USB flash drive to my local library and save records to that. Ancestry allows you to share a record find which can be useful. Another way to save records is to attach and send them in an e-mail that you can access when you get home.

I think I found Maria on the 1939 register with possibly 3 of her children

Only 1 is shown but is showing as under school age  (and when you look up Mary Chicken born 1934 you are shown a birth with MMN of Gascoigne)

When did they start evacuating children from Newcastle - could the older ones have gone with the school? and that be why not on the system

This was my first post and I appreciate the replies to my query. I have looked up freebmd as advised and hope the children are correct that I have found. I think the first census some of these children would be on is 1931 which I believe would not be available until at least 2032. Are there any other sources I could check to confirm that I have the correct children without having to order copy Birth Certificates which may not belong to the family.

You can order birth certificates with provisios - so you only want it if the mother is Maria etc - however if the name has a slight spelling difference you still won't get it - so if she's as Mariah that wouldnt be a match

Going the other way (because sometimes you need to go back to go forward)

Maria Gascoigne born 1900 in Newcastle - mmn Tear
Alexander Chicken born jan q 1901 in Tynemouth - mmn  Couley

Deaths
Alexander Chicken Sep 1976 born 26th Nov 1900 in Newcastle (fits with the birth)
Maria Chicken Dec 1977 born 11 Jun 1900 in Newcastle (also fits with the birth above)

Where did you find the mmn for Maria Gascoigne and Alexander Chicken?
Sorry to sound stupid but I have been searching freebmd and familysearch and I could not see it.
Am I looking in the wrong place?
