Christopher Honey & Mary Stevens
« on: Thursday 26 July 18 11:25 BST (UK) »
Hello, if anyone has Christopher Honey & Mary Stevens within your family tree I wonder if you might be able to help me please?
I believe that Christopher Honey married to Mary Stevens on 18 June 1730 in Bresselsleigh, Berks going on to have children named John 1730, Margaret 1732, Mary  1732,  James 1734 & Christopher 1737 all being baptized in Sunningwell.
As I live  many miles away & being unable to visit a records centre to check out the parish registers for myself this information was obtained for me a number of years ago when I paid for some professional research to be carried out on my behalf.
Taking a fresh look on the Ancestry website has just let me to find that many folk have further children for them too.... Richard 1739, Elizabeth 1742,  Ann 1749 & Hannah Ann 1751. I am puzzled as to why the researcher didn't note these further offspring who were also baptized in Sunningwell for me.
I am of the old school having been taught that no-one should be added to a tree without proper verification. I have tried checking these new children out on the Ancestry site but could not find baptism entries for them nor on Family Search either.
I was just wondering if anyone might have checked out these offspring in the parish registers for confirmation please?  Hannah Ann Honey looks to have been born to Christopher & Mary in 1751 & with Mary Stevens having been baptized in 1705 means that she would have been around 46 when this child was born & I worry that that age seems old for the time period.
If anyone can give me any help or advice I would be most grateful please.
Thank you.

If you look on FamilySearch and search for:
   Surname – Honey
   Birthplace – Berkshire
   Birth year – 1730 to 1755
   Father’s first name – Christopher
   Father’s last name – Honey
   Mother’s first name – Mary
Look in the Pedigree Resource File

All of the names you have listed are listed there indicating born in Sunningwell with birth date and later on the list christened in Besselsleigh with the dates.

Mother’s maiden name as Stevens,

Spouses and children given for all.

I agree with your comment that I want verification before I add someone to a family tree but the above might give you a lead.  I have added people where there is good indication that they are linked to the tree but added a qualification that they are not proven, just probable on evidence available on ...........

I couldn’t find anything on Ancestry or FindMyPast either.

Hi Treefan,

I might be able to offer some help here.
I have a copy of the transcribed registers for Sunningwell St.Leonard's, Berks on CD from the OxfordshireFHS (OXF-AB03 parish registers) and it transpires that the registers have not been
transcribed for the period;
baptisms 1543-1635, 1685-1740,
marriages 1556-1636, 1665-1740 and
burials 1556-1648 and 1657-1740
with the added comment; Some of the early registers are badly faded and difficult to read, and so not all have been transcribed.

With regard to the marriage of Christopher Honey, I can confirm they married in Besselsleigh on 18-6-1730 by Licence. No other details shown.

I hope this helps.

Alan

It's strange that FamilySearch lists children's birth date as at Sunningwell and their respective baptisms at Besselsleigh at a slightly later date.  Presumably they got the information from the parish records.

An intriguing mystery, perhaps reference to the Bishop's transcripts for the two parishes might throw some light on the discrepancy.

One mystery solved but another created.

I've looked at the Besselsleigh baptisms for this period and there are no Honey/Hunny ones.

The mystery is why some person or persons on FamilySearch Pedigree Resource have the baptisms recorded as at Besselsleigh when parish records indicate otherwise.

I see from a map that the two parishes are fairly close to one another - probably about 2.5 miles - I wonder therefore if the same person was the incumbent of both parishes and the records got jumbled up when the Bishop's transcripts were prepared.
