Cheshire Families Buck & Elliott
« on: Thursday 26 July 18 14:34 BST (UK) »
Hello!

My name is Georgia and I am struggling to find my great grandparents' parents.

My granddad was Philip J Slack (b. 20 dec 1947 in wilmslow, d. aug 2007 in stockport)
His father: Bernard H Slack (b. 27 nov 1913 in Bucklow, d. sep 1976 in Manchester)
His mother: Elsie Buck (b. 13 aug 1915 / 1917? in Stalybridge, d. unknown?)

Bernard and elsie married in dec 1936 in Bucklow, Cheshire.

After looking at Bernard's birth record, his mother's maiden name is Hood. I can't find her first name or even locate her. Again I cannot locate his father either.

The same with Elsie. I was looking on CheshireBMD and noticed there was a record that said her mother's maiden name was Elliott. No surname or forename of her father and no forename for her mother.

I can't locate a marriage for an Elliott and a Buck, so this leads me to believe Elsie was illegitimate?

I really need help with these matters because I am stuck :(
Thank you

Welcome to rootschat

What information does Bernard & Elsies marriage certificate give for their fathers.  Who witnessed the marriage

Welcome to Rootschat.

I'm assuming that you got Bernard's date of birth from the registration of his death, and the surname of his mother from his birth registration.  You may have to purchase his birth certificate in order to verify his mother's forename.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

hello!!
Thank you for responding!

I think I may have to invest in both Bernard's and Elsie's birth certificates
I just have a feeling they're both illegitimate...

You really need the certificate to confirm their fathers.

There is a marriage in Dukinfield 23 July 1910 between a William Buck & Sarah Ann Elliott that may be relevant.

The birth registration indexes will only show Fathers surname and mothers maiden surname.  If it shows both names the child is not illegitimate.  An illegitimate birth on the GRO index will show with no mothers maiden name https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

You can purchase these as PDF's from the GRO website for £6 each

Funnily enough I had seen a 1939 census record on ancestry which had a Elsie Buck and a Sarah Ann Buck living together, but it stated that Elsie was single, which doesn't add up because she married Bernard in 1936.

Therefore I'm not sure if that is her mother? Could be another Elsie Buck.

Thanks for your help, I will probably purchase her birth cert! :)

I see from your online tree that you have the 1939 register with the couple married so you have their birth dates.  You really need their birth certificates to take this back further as they will give the details of their parents
