Thank you, are you saying there was another child Mary Ann , born and died in 1840? And maiden name of Hales, so she was Susannah Hales.
A couple of wedding certs for me to get hold of I think.

Don't know if this is the correct George

21st June 1835
Bucknall cum Bagnall
George James
Mother Susannah James
 Also
19th December 1830
Bucknall cum Bagnall
Elijah James
Mother Susannah James

And just in case this is your Susannah

5th November 1815
Bucknall
Susannah James
parents William & Susannah
Father a farmer of Lander's Bank

The images of both marriages are on FindMyPast, all information transcribed
They may be two different Susannah's

Thanks Comberton, a little confused as to why Susannah was described as a spinster when she married William Wood in 1849. Had Thomas just done a runner? or would they have been legally divorced. So many questions ..............

What we are saying is that 'your' Susannah was indeed a spinster when she married William Wood and that her 4 children were all illegitimate - can only see baptism for George at Bucknall cum Bagnall in 1835, daughter Emma  1836/1837 shown on 1851 census to have been born in Lancashire, can't find a baptism or indeed a birth entry for Alice James 1838/1839 nor Hannah James 1844/1845.

The marriage of Thomas James and Susannah Hales 31/12/1832, Stoke On Trent is probably a different Susannah ??  Is that a fair assumption?

Incidentally the family do come from Stoke.

Will need to get some birth and marriage certs to confirm I'm following the right lines.

The children baptised at Penkridge had parents Thomas and Susannah - as previously mentioned there was a Marianne bp.16/4/1840 buried 24/6/1840 Penkridge as Mary Ann.   Mother Susannah bc.1815 bur.13/5/1840 Penkridge.

Emma bp.1837 Penkridge (dau. of Thomas and Susannah) appears to be with an uncle Joseph Hales on 1841 census at Penkridge.

Mother Susannah bc.1815 bur.13/5/1840 Penkridge.  Sorry for my questions, but does that mean Susannah buried 13/5/40?  if so, either she is not the correct person or the person who married William Wood is incorrect.

Thank you Comberton, no I hadn't seen that before. To be honest I'm not sure where do begin from all the info received on this thread alone.  I need to establish if the Susannah James who married William Wood is the correct person and the only way of doing that it seems is by ordering a few certs. I'm tracing back through the census's from George and Hannah to their son Thomas and Sarah, to Percy born in 1908, to my Father born in 1944. All from Stoke. Just trying to establish George's Mother Susannah.

Thanks again
