Ballygawley Protestant Church Burials

I am looking for burial records at the Ballygawley Protestant or Presbyterian Church. Specifically, I am looking for Henry Hunter, who was buried there sometime in the early 1800s. I am also looking for his wife, either Ellen or Elizabeth, along with records of any other members of the Hunter family. Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Most Presbyterian churches don't keep burial records and whilst the Church of Ireland did many of the pre-1870ish registered were destroyed. So, unless you find a headstone, entry in a family Bible, newspaper report, etc. it can be very difficult to pinpoint a burial from such an early period.

Thank you for your reply. This is disappointing, if not altogether unexpected, news. Perhaps someone will have some of the other records you mentioned. I am going to post another message asking specifically about that. In the meantime, if anyone does have anything specific to this cemetery it would be very helpful in corroborating a narrative that was written up many decades after his death.

I am looking for any information about a Henry Hunter who was born perhaps around 1770 and likely died near and was buried in Ballygawley, probably sometime between 1826 and 1860. I believe his wife was Elizabeth Hunter, who died in 1826 in Templereagh, but other information about him could help confirm this. Any and all leads would be very helpful. Thank you,

The Hunters I've traced were in Mullans townland, Clogher parish, County Tyrone. "Henry Hunter" (sometimes called Harry) was counted there in various records, but Jon says he's researching a Henry Hunter from Ballyclog, just outside Stewartstown, so these are different men of the same name. Jon has found evidence suggesting his branch of the Hunter family came from Aghadowey Parish in Co. Londonderry.

"My" Henry Hunter of Mullans, Clogher parish, was married before about 1815, and had children (born abt 1815-1840) including John, Margery, Robert, Charles Alexander and Mary Ann Hunter. When Henry's son Charles Alexander Hunter married Sarah Ann Hadden in 1864 at Ballygawley Presbyterian Church, Charles' father "Harry Hunter" was a farmer, noted as "Deceased."

The only Hunter counted at Mullans in Griffith's Valuation was John Hunter, almost surely Henry's eldest son of that name. This is another indication that Henry had died before civil death registration began in 1864.
