I can find John in the WH in 1881 but the only Bridget Tierney in Preston is married to Daniel and also has a son John aged 12

That other John might have been the one registered in Preston 1869, mother's maiden name Marr.

Several death registrations in Preston of Tierney children in 1868. They seem to match some of the births posted by Heywood.
Daniel aged 1;  Mary Ann aged 3; Michael aged 3. An epidemic perhaps. Death of another Mary Ann Tierney, aged 7 was also registered in Preston that year.

1870 death registration in Preston: Thomas Tierney, aged 9. His age fits the Thomas birth registered at Stalmine in 1861 (my reply #8).

Did Elizabeth survive? Not found a death for her yet.

Birth of Thomas in Stalmine 1861 would be logical if Bridget was from Armagh and landed in Lancashire at Fleetwood. Or maybe he was born when she was heading to Fleetwood for a visit to Ireland.

Lancashire BMD http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/index.php shows several possible births and some deaths for the children.

1865 Mary Ann and Michael with McGill
1868 Daniel - McGill
1869 Elizabeth - McGuill

1871 census
1871 4174/14/21 has
Bridget Tearn 31 yrs b Ireland
Catherine Tearn 11 yrs b Ireland
Elizabeth Tearn 2 yrs b Preston
Boarding  in Blackburn.
There is a McGuire family boarding too - not McGuill though.

I wonder if these are your family?
Heywood

If this family on 1871 census is correct and if Catherine was a daughter of the marriage of Bridget to John Tierney the marriage may well have taken place in Ireland and probably before civil registration of marriage started in that country.  Catherine was born before civil births registration began in Ireland.
Do you know the religious denomination of the family? Knowing religion is vital for an attempt to find a marriage or baptisms of any potential elder siblings in Ireland at this time. Going by the names I'd assume Catholic but one should never assume anything in FH.

A John Tierney death I posted in reply #5 may have been as a result of stabbing. There was a report in the Preston Chronicle 22nd May 1881 of Preston Quarter Sessions about a John Tierney having been stabbed.

Meanwhile, in July that year over in Oswaldtwistle a Michael Tierney (36) was indicted for feloniously wounding somebody.

Bridget Tierney deaths noted in the Preston Chronicle:
1881 (Nov) at the workhouse, Fulwood, aged 46.
1885 Saul St., aged 48.

Edit. Registration of 1885 death was in Trinity sub district, same one as 1881 death of John.

1867 A Bridget Tierney, described in one paper as " a young woman" was charged with stealing from her stepfather, Joseph Dowlan. Reported in Preston Chronicle and Preston Herald.

1863 John Tierney and another man were charged with assaulting a fellow-prisoner in the police lock-up. They were all drunk. (Preston Herald 19th Dec. 1863) John Tierney's name was in other police reports for drunk & disorderly or fighting. Another police report described a Tierney (first name not given) and another man as "fighting like dragons".

Other Tierneys feature in court reports.

A death and a marriage.
Death: 1867 Thomas Tierney aged 60 at the workhouse. (Preston Herald 12th Oct.)
Marriage: 1885  Catherine Tierney (May). I thought this might be the Catherine who was with Bridget on 1871 census.
