Tracing Great Grandfather
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 20:41 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace my great grandfather named James Hughes. A year of birth 1877 and place of birth we believe to be Madina's Reds which we think is in New Zealand.  Is anyone able to confirm if Madinas Reds is located in New Zealand? Is anyone able to assist with my search?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Carol

Welcome from me too :)

Presumably the birthplace comes from the 1911 census transcription (in Openshaw, Lancs)?

Have you traced his marriage to Lily, c1900 (and 1901 census if in UK)?

Looking at the 1911 census there is nothing in the column next to the birth place, for nationality if born abroad - so Madinas Red or whatever it is must be in the UK

The first letter to me looks like the first letter in Nellie's name - so maybe it starts with an N

For what it is worth the census clerk appears to have thought the last word in the birthplace was Beds - as it is coded 400 (Bedfordshire), according to the annotation.  The first letter doesn’t resemble the other capital Bs on the page, though.

I must say it isn’t ringing any bells with NZ placenames for me.
