Kilmachalmag, Bute
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 23:01 BST (UK) »
John Bannatyne was born on on 18 December 1740 (OPR Births 558/10 182 Rothesay). Son of William Bannatyne and Elspeth Broun in Kilmachalmag. The only place of that name I can find is way up in the Highlands. Is it a Bute place name, and if so where is it?

Thanks, that was the one I found, but that seems unlikely to me to be a birthplace in the Rothesay, Bute Parish birth Register. Is there a place of that name on Bute?

I looked on Genuki in case there was a similar sounding place name on Bute but could not see anything.

Have you looked at other entries on the same page in case there were other errors, mistranscriptions or mix ups in the OPR pages?

Another thought, perhaps there was a farmstead by this name in Bute which does not show up in place name searches.  :-\

Where did the family live?

Have you checked for baptisms of John's siblings to see what they say about abode?

Do you know where Elspeth and William came from?

Ruskie,

Just a thought...

You're good with maps, may be worth looking at an old map with gaelic spellings as 'Kil' may begin 'Cill' as with Kildonan/Cill Donnan  :-\

Thank you Ruskie. There’s another birth the previous month at Kilmichael, which would seem likely to be the same place? And one a fortnight before John, again at Kilmichalmag, written clearly that way.

I’m struggling with my unfamiliarity with the geography, and indeed Gallic/Scots spelling of names. When John married in April 1767 (OPR Marriages 558/30 14 Rothesay) he is described as son of William Bannatyne in Gorleans, and his wife Margaret Whyte as daughter of Archibald Whyte tenant in Craeslaigmorie.  When John and Margaret’s son Robert was born in 1772, John is described as a boatman in Rothesay, and Rothesay becomes the normal place name from then onwards. Because I am doing this all through Scotland’s People, it’s not easy to pick up family groupings, especially when Bute seems to have had quite a few Bannantyne families. I;m grateful for your suggestions.

Mention here on 2nd page (using right side arrow) but worth a scroll through the other pages;

https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/historical-tax-rolls/land-tax-rolls-1645-1831/land-tax-rolls-buteshire-volume-02/1

"William McLeod Bannatyne Esqr. Lord Bannatyne
Mill of Aitrick, Kilmahalmag and Easter Kames"

Add, scroll down to bottom of each page for transcription (easier to read)!

Thanks, Annie, I'll have a look at that. Pretty sure my Bannatynes weren't Lords, though!

;D  ;D

I thought scrolling through the pages & checking the transcriptions at bottom of each page, you may recognise the other names you listed which may have different spellings?
