Edward RICHARDSON 1805-?
« on: Sunday 29 July 18 00:29 BST (UK) »
Edward RICHARDSON and his wife Elizabeth and a number of children arrived in Sydney on the Morayshire in 1839. Edward was born in Brede, Sussex, England in 1805 and married Elizabeth in 1826. His children were all born in Brede.

Know his ancestry, but am trying to find what happened to him. Did they stay in Australia.

It may be a help if you were able to tell us the names of his children.
They may be easier to locate in later times if the family remained in Australia.

On the New Zealand board you have an enquiry about RICHARDSONs. Is this enquiry here related to the NZ enquiry?

The Australian 23 Apr 1839 p2
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/36862139?
The Morrayshire, from the Brazils via the Cape, arrived, on Saturday afternoon ; she has brought with her 110 Emigrants belonging to the Juliana, emigrant ship, which, was
wrecked at the Cape. The Mary Hay was to have left three weeks after, with the remaining
number of the emigrants, about 90 persons. During the Juliana's passage to the Cape, she
lost 13 persons ; the Morrayshire, from the Cape to here, had two deaths and one birth on board.

Matthew that is the right family.

Sort of connected to the NZ post, trying to find if they were the same Edward.

Also on the Juliana/Morayshire was a Thomas and Martha BATEUP, subject of an earlier post.

Not good to have this at two sites. It would be useful to have some context here.

You are researching the several members of the RICHARDSON family of Brede who emigrated to NZ?.

Currently, your enquiry on the NZ board -

"...Edward RICHARDSON arrived in Wellington in January 1852. Do not know where he came from or what ship, or even if he stayed.... He was known by and possibly related to Thomas RICHARDSON who arrived on the Arab in 1841. Thomas wrote a letter back to family in Brede in Sussex in April 1852 and in it he mentions having seen and met with Edward."

And you are wondering if the Edward RICHARDSON who arrived in Sydney 1839, is the same man who arrived in Wellington, 1852. You are encouraged to believe this because Thomas and Martha (nee RICHARDSON) BATEUP also arrived on the Morayshire?

This from your BATEUP enquiry -

"....Martha was the 2nd daughter of Thomas RICHARDSON and Mercy FURNER, and was born in Brede in 1816. An older brother Thomas, and two younger ones James and Henry all came to New Zealand. A couple of trees on Ancestry have their other brother William also coming to Australia, but so far have found nothing to confirm this".

How do you know that Edward RICHARDSON arrived in Wellington, January 1852....what is your source?

Ancestry Assisted Immigrant Passenger List
Edward RICHARDSON who arrived in Sydney, 1839, Morayshire, is son of George, a sawyer (surgeon?) and Sarah, of Brede.

Eliza RICHARDSON of Ewhurst, is daughter of Thomas BAKER, and wife Sarah.

Three children on arrival - Thomas 6 years, Ellen 12 years, Ester 3 years.

TROVE have mentions of an Edward RICHARDSON in New South Wales from the 1840s-1866 when he died.
This was an Inquest at the Rising Sun Inn at Darlington into his death (2nd column) and names Elizabeth his wife.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/18712427

Edward appears to have had liquor licenses for several establishments.  Also, possibly some financial problems.

NSW Births have four RICHARDSON children with parents named Edward and Elizabeth in the 1840s.

The Shipping Gazette had an Edward RICHARDSON as a passenger to Port Nicholson NZ and return in 1847.

This can now be closed as it would appear that this Edward is not the one who arrived in NZ in 1852.
