Barnet Franks, died 1815
« on: Sunday 29 July 18 12:57 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Barnet was Jewish and buried at Brady Street Cemetery in 1815. His father's name is given in Hebrew as Gabriel Gasdorf. Gasdorf appears to be the Hebrew for Franks, as it is used for his son's 1810 marriage too. Can anyone find any record of Gabriel or anything on the origin of the pair?

I'd appreciate any help!

There is an online tree that claims Barnet Franks was involved in a court case in 1773 and 1776 (assault). The former refers to him as 'of Chequer Court, Towerhill' and 'Late of Calais, mariner'.

If he was a mariner then his father might be the Gabriel Franks who was in the Marine Police and murdered in 1798 (Google it).

Thanks for all that! Yes, I have used Synagogue Scribes before. What exactly does this mean? Was he in debt and fled to France? He must’ve returned to England as he was buried at Brady Street Jewish Cemetery in 1815.

Also, are there any details of the 1776 assault case? I’ve not found any articles on Barnet Franks on the FindMyPast section for newspapers.

His father was Gabriel!
...which is, of course, why I mentioned the reference; although there is not proof that this (of the ones to Barnet) are the same people as your ancestors.

Good luck in trying to establish links.
