What became of Jemima Louisa Barker?
« on: Sunday 29 July 18 20:18 BST (UK) »
Jemima Louisa Barker nee Lloyd was born in 1824 in Northumberland and married John Pooler Barker in London.  They subsequently settled in Newcastle under Lyme where they ran a wine and spirit vaults. There were 6 children, at least one of whom, Annie Evelyn, died in childhood. In February 1861 John Barker died and the widowed Jemima moved from one pub to another gradually going downhill until in March 1864, running the Coopers Arms in Hanley, she was made bankrupt.  After that she disappears. Does anyone know what became of her?  Did she re-marry, die or emigrate?  The remaining children were Fanny, George, Susanna, Emily and Florence.  They have proved difficult to trace with certainty, though George seems to have gone to sea and Fanny went to work for her aunt and uncle as a barmaid in Burslem.

There’s a suggested additional one in my list at reply #3 - John Henry, sadly short-lived.

I see that Susan(n) died as Susan Adelaide Parkinson in Australia (Korumbarra, Victoria) in 1927 - parents recorded as Jno Barker and Jemima Lloyd.

Wow!  Thanks avm228!  You have added quite a bit to what I had uncovered.  I knew about the Beardmore connection though I too haven't found the Owen marriage, but I didn't know about their emigration to Australia etc.  Neither had I found the other son, John Henry, though I suspected other children because of the age gap.
I do have probable information on George who seems to have returned to Stoke after 10 years with the navy and settled down lodging with the family of Henry White in Trentham, whose widow, Lydia he later had 2 children with, Ethel and Marian.
