Looking for Alfred Annetts and Eliza Upstill before 1861
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 16:04 BST (UK) »
Alfred Annetts was born about 1832 - bapt 30 dec 1832 s/o John Annetts and his wife Sarah nee Wallis.

On 1861 census Alfred is in Monmouth age given as 25 with wife Eliza b Monmouth and two children albert b Chilton, Berks and (H)ellen b Monmouth.
In 1871 they are in Chilton Berks, with additional child Frederick b Chilton.
In 1881 they are still in Chilton but without Ellen

I have birth registrations for the two sons in Wantage district mmn Upstill, but nothing for Ellen / Helen in Monmouthshire (should be abt 1859).

ANNATTS, Albert George       mmn Upstill Q1 1857 WANTAGE  Volume 02C  Page 292

ANNETTS, Frederick John mmn Upstill Q1 1863 WANTAGE  Volume 02C  Page 303

I think Alfred died in 1890 in West Hagbourne. Eliza is on 1891 census in West Hagbourne and on 1901 and 1911 in Chilton, although in 1911 her pob is given as Brailes Warwick.

Can anyone find Alfred and Eliza in 1841 and 1851 before they married?

Curiously the only marriage of an Eliza Upstill in Monmouth at the right sort of time is to a Thomas Annetts (or variants) not an Alfred. Could the indexer have got it wrong or a mistake on the Cert?

Just noticed that 1891 Eliza's pob is Shipston on Stour, Warks!. She is landlady of the Wheatsheaf in West Hagbourne. There is a newspaper report in 1891 where she was granted the licence and it mentions she is Alfred's widow.

Thank you that would certainly fit one of her many birth places, but age is a bit out.
I had found an Elizabeth Upstill b abt 1835 living in Monmouth in 1851, parents John and Harriett. This Elizabeth was b Bath Somerset, sister Jane in Warwickshire - no town given. In later census Jane is born in Bath. Elizabeth is not with family in 1861, so could she have married and become Eliza before then.
Oddly Elizabeth is listed at the bottom, with other siblings above in descending order of age.

Thank you that looks like the one. Better match on age with baptism than later censuses.

Maybe same John Upstill, he was born Sussex, a John Upstill married Abigail Austin in East dean nr Chichester in 1821. An Abigail Upstill buried in Brailes, age 33 in 1829, then a John Upstill widower full age married Harriet Harbour in Monmouth in 1839

Thanks again, So many variations of the name. Maybe an indication of how they pronounced it. Maybe John Annetts was illiterate and had to get someone to fill in his form. Alfred could sign his name and spelt it Annetts by 1870 when he witnessed my great grandmother's marriage.
