Artillery in Dumfries in around 1808
« on: Wednesday 01 August 18 22:21 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm researching an ancestor of my husband. The person I am looking into was called William Watt and he was married in Dumfries in 1808. I have a parish record listing for Dumfries and he is described as being 'of the artillery'.

Does anybody have any idea what that might be referring to. I'd assumed that meant he was in the army. Is there a place I might be able to get some more information about him?

Thank you

What other info do you have to help you identify him in records? Do you know when and where he was born for example?

There is this record as a possibility http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8857510

The record that Monica suggests is for a man born in Kinnellar Aberdeenshire, discharged from the 8th Battalion Royal Artillery in 1816 after 12 and 3/4 years service, so a possibility but no personal info to confirm.
No other William Watts leap off the page.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Hello,

Thank you for all your help MonicaL and MaxD.

Unfortunately I know very little about this William Watt at the moment. All I know is that he married a Henrietta Sturgeon in 1808 and that he had at least one child called Elizabeth Watt in 1822.

The record I have for his marriage just lists the marriage and his occupation. No parents names or anything.

I will have a look at that record you suggested, thank you.

Hello again everyone,

Does anyone know how to use FindMyPast to find this specific file.

The file that might related to William Watt was very kindly shown to me on the National Archive website. There is a link there to FindMyPast, but if I click it, that doesn't take me to the specific record.

I don't have a subscription but I have bought some credits to be able to view it. I can't seem to narrow down my search and I'm running out of credits.

I've tried putting this reference number from the NA record(WO 97/1268/264) into the search box, but that doesn't help.

Thank you x

From the home page search box select Military, Armed Forces and conflict.  Enter William Watt and in the location Kinnellar and nothing else (too many inputs confuse the machine!).  That brings up 2 results, the first of which is that man.  As you are using credits, don't open the transcription, go straight to the image (it is the record from the National Archives),  There are two pages, download the first, hit the right arrow and download the second.
