Death in Transvaal 1900
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 13:33 BST (UK) »
I have a Thomas ( Howard) Pritchard born in  Wrexham , Denbighshire , Wales c 1875.
Last seen in 1891 in Wrexham as a bank clerk.

He is named on his parents grave as having died in Middleburg,   Transvall in 1901 .
I have tried Family Search and British newspapers but drawn a blank.
Can anyone help please.

Hi,
It looks like the records on line for that area are listed from 1913.
I have checked other sites, no results, sorry.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

The source quoted is:

In Memoriam" by S Watt:

You can order a death cert from the GRO, the details are in the index here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen%27s_South_Africa_Medal

is this the medal he would have been presented with,  along with the Defence of Kimberley.
DEFENCE OF KIMBERLEY (14 October 1899)
If so, as he died out there would it have been sent home to his family, by then both of his parents had died.
I can`t find any records of when he went out.

He did receive the Queens South Africa Medal with clasp "Defence of Kimberley" (medal roll).  The criteria for that clasp required him to have been there some time in the period 13 Oct 1899 and 17 May 1900. The medal rolls also say that he also served as a private in the Kimberley Town Guard.  It looks as if he started as a soldier and subsequently became a clerk with the ASC, or maybe the other way round, there is nothing to tell us that definitively.  In any event, the one medal was for his service there.  The roll also says he served with what looks like  BMI but notes "no trace" so there won't be any records of whatever that was.  There are a number of administrative notes on the medal record which are not entirely clear but may be indicating the medal was issued and returned.
As to finding out when he went, don't know.  If he went as a civilian, joined the Kimberley Town Guard just for the campaign then he won't have a British Army record.

There is a specialist forum devoted to the Anglo Boer war that you might consider joining?
