Mutter family smugglers 1700`s
« on: Friday 03 August 18 17:43 BST (UK) »
Hi, i think someone in my family said were too were related to them. My great grand parerents came from Corfe in Somerset  ( whole churchard of Mutters in there)and moved to Surrey where i was born.
I have recently moved to Devon and read up a bit on the smugglers which was quite interesting seeing i am so close to my roots as such. Any info on the family tree etc of them would be gratefully received.
Kind regards
M.M.

Too avoid a lot of Muttering....   ;D  Maybe you'd be better of just researching your actual line starting with yourself, your parents, their parents etc etc etc?
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

The area was not anywhere near as built up as it is now. Hamilton Lane would have either come under the parish of Littleham or the parish of Withycombe Raleigh.

If you have access to the census of 1841 - 1851, a trawl back and forth should show it up (and the people who lived there). A word of warning though the address might not state 'Hamiltion Lane' as such!

If you don't have access to the census let me know and I'll have a go.

There is a small local museum in Exmouth - if you look them up they might be able to give you some background. I've found them very friendly and helpful.  There were, and are a lot of pubs in the area, and they were called different things, Inns, Taverns, Victuallers, etc (just to confuse the issue!).
