Mary Brien/Breen
« on: Friday 03 August 18 19:01 BST (UK) »
Mary Brien was born about 1830 in County Carlow, Ireland to Bartholomew Brien. In 1853, she married Michael Brien/Bryan/Breen in Tunstall, Staffordshire. From Roman Catholic PRs I've found that they had three children named Ellen, Ellen and Thomas. Ellen and Ellen died in infancy (born 1855 and 1859 and neither present for 1861 census) and Thomas (born 1862) died in 1882 in Wolstanton registration district (although in 1881 he is a private at Whittington Barracks). I have Mary in all censuses up to and before 1881. In 1881, she is lodging with Thomas Moore in Wolstanton. She is a widow by this point, her husband Michael died in 1867 in Wolstanton registration district. But I can't seem to find her after 1881 so perhaps she died? The surname changes from Brean to Breen to Bryan so obviously very confusing  :) but maybe someone could point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Have you looked for a remarriage?

There's a Mary Brien marriage in 1886 Wolstanton

Groom either Walter Francis Adlington * or John O'Neil

Would be worth checking out those names in 1891 to see if either of them have a wife Mary from Ireland who could be yours.

* I think Walter marries an Ellen so the more Irish John O'Neil is your best bet.

Thanks, I’ve checked the 1891 Census and Mary and John “Neal” are much younger than my Mary.

I think I have found her in 1891 in Wolstanton as “Mary Bream”? She’s in an institution of some kind although I can’t quite figure out what it is?

It's the Wolstanton and Burslem Union Workhouse.

There's a Mary Breen death in Mar 1895 Wolstanton but age is wrong at 58  :-\

It probably is her, the 1891 Census has no other candidates with a similar name or age.

Thank you Milliepede
