Millham Family in Newton Township, Sussex, New Jersey
« on: Friday 03 August 18 20:48 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the Millham family in Newton, Sussex, New Jersey. My file starts with Jacob Millham, born 1778 in Newton Sussex. I believe he had five brothers: Adam (b. 1772), Robert (b. 1774), Samuel (b. 1776), Morris (b. 1780) and one other ? (b. 1780). All of these men were born in Newton and had a father listed in the LDS as Millham (b. 1745), also born in Newton. There was no first name for the father and no mother listed. Any information about this family would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

There is a will for a Simon Millham written 18 October 1820 he was of Newton Sussex County.
It not very informative as he left everything to his wife Eleanor.
On 26 November 1830 she made her mark declaring, she had paid all his debts and fulfilled all the requirements of probate.

Possible parents?

On Ancestry.

1830 census Newton Sussex County
Simon Millham
1 white male 70-79
1 white female 80-89
1 free colored female under 10

This would make his DOB as circa 1750 to 1760

So he may have written his will in 1820, but he's still alive as of the 1830 census

His wife Eleanor died 4 February 1836 w/o Simon both are at the Huntsville Cemetery Sussex County. Gravestone on Find a Grave.

The will of Elenor Milham 1836 looks to be a place to start.

Usually the wills of widows and spinsters have more family detail.

Thank you Sandra for all the information. According to the inquiry on the above site the researcher wrote that when he read copies of Simon and Eleanor's wills it appeared they had no children as Simon left his estate to Elenor and she in turn left hers to a friend, Doctor Steven Hedges.

Next move should be the probate office or where ever the deeds are kept for the area of Newton.
Land could have been transferred during their lifetime to possible children.
They were in their 80's when they died and unlikely to have continued farming.
Both Simon and Eleanor names should be researched in case she gave away/transferred property
between 1830-1836.
Twenty to forty years after their deaths should also be considered, incudling affidavits of relationship. My husbands family had divided the property of the gg grandfather after his death and did not record it. Only when 3rd generation wanted to sell the land did they discover they had no deed it was still in the gg grandfathers name although they had been paying the taxes on it, and had to provide an affidavit of descent from the gg grandfather a long legal process.
