Thanks all,

I just found the page/folio switches on the census records in FindMyPast.
Thanks.

Also have viewed Mr Cawell in Liverpool. Hard to say if it is our lad.

If I relax the age requirement a bit, I see a 'Thos Carrol' in Blackburn born 1831.
There are other possibilities, all of them (at first glance at least) requiring some sort of compromise.

Sorry, I have no maiden name for Catherine, the daughter or the mother.
All I have for the daughter is birth-year 1839-40, Ireland.

I meant Catherine, the mother.
Sorry, I am assuming that Ann is the connection you are researching and that you would have her birth.
If you had Catherine’s maiden name, there may be other births where the child died, for example. The gap between child Catherine and Ann is a big one.
I would think it difficult to link the two census families unless, as you are trying to do, find Thomas. You would then need a marriage for him with his father’s name.
There are several men of the same name with approximate year of birth.

Very perceptive, Heywood.
Ann Carroll is my direct ancestor and I am hoping to use Thomas Carroll and his sister Catherine as a way of learning more about the family's origins. For example, they might name a town in Ireland as their birthplace in the later censuses. Besides, I am curious about the large gap between 1840-52 when other children may have been born and died. They too might offer a mother maiden name.

I have in my notes (a few years ago) that Ann Carroll was born in Lambton near Chester Le Street March 2 1852 though I did not write down the source of that data. Christened on March 21 according to FamilySearch.

I have also seen - long ago - a suggestion that the mother was Catherine Long but I have never been able to confirm this.

I just had another go at finding Ann's MMN in GRO and came up with this candidate:
[]
CARROLL, MARGARET  ANN
(mmn) MCCAVEN
1852  M Quarter in DURHAM
Volume 10A  Page 151

Margaret Ann is daughter of Michael and Margaret according to FS baptism record.

This looks like your Ann

Chester-Le-Street seems to be Houghton-Le-Spring registration district and the baptism supports this. I can’t see a birth though.

What is the maiden name of Catherine?

Is this a possibility for maiden name of mother, doesn't give an occupation for father

Thos Carroll Baptism 17 Feb 1837 Offerlane, Laois, Ireland

Father:   James Carroll Mother: Cath Darcy

Chester le Street and Houghton le Spring are entirely separate registration districts.

Thanks JenB

Apologies.

I was going off 1861 census where Ann shows born Chester -Le-Street. Her baptism is Houghton-Le-Spring which is also the registration district for the census - (Painshaw). I put two and two together and made a mess  ::)

However, I still can’t see a birth - possibly one in Sunderland  :-\
