Merchant Navy ship name help

Hello

I'm trying to research my Great Grandfather's ship history, but I'm struggling to decipher the name of a previous ship from his records.

He was on The Campania in 1903, which sailed from Liverpool to New York and back again.  On the ship listings, it has a column for 'previous ship', but I can't establish what the name was...

Line 97 - Joseph Scaife on the attached photo

It looks like MISABRA, but no amount of searching brings anything up.  Can anyone help please?

Incidentally - does anyone know where I could find out more about WHAT they were carrying or the ships log etc?  (he deserted on one trip, and on another, they had to leave him behind at a New Orleans hospital - would love to know why)

I think it is the SS Mesaba if the Atlantic Transport Line and was a cargo ship. It was around at the time of the Titantic disaster as the name comes up with reference to that disaster.

Thanks ever so much for your help. 

If that's the right ship, then he would have been on it prior to 1903 (when he was on the Campania and listed his previous ship as the Mesaba), so the Titanic event was many years after his stint :-)

I'm off to do a bit more research on it now - thanks again!

Doubtful if the ships cargo would be recorded in her logbook. "Lloyds  List" may give you an answer. The narrative pages of the logbook may state the reason for his hospital confinement in New Orleans.

What date did he sign on CAMPANIA. I can only find the logbooks/crew agreements of MESABA for 1903

The logbook of the CAMPANIA states 20/02/1903 to 17/03/1903.  Liverpool to New York to Liverpool.
