I took a look at the logbook of BELLE OF IRELAND rather than MESABA. There is only one years difference in his recorded age which seems a little erroneous to me.
Unfortunately there was no Crew Agreement (which will give his previous ship and last address) but the logbook did record a round the world voyage.
Your G/Grandfather was a Merchant Navy Fireman. A hard man by definition, working in temperatures of 140F plus, four hours on, four hours off, 24/7, seven days a week, with no days off whilst at sea.
If you want an in site into the conditions that Merchant Navy Firemen endured, try and get hold of the book NO LONGER REQUIRED by Bill Linskey
https://www.amazon.co.uk/No-Longer-Required-Merchant-Navy/dp/0953728501
It will make you laugh and cry at the same time.

Hi Seaweed

That's fascinating, thank you so, so much.

I wish  there would have been a crew agreement - do you think it was destroyed, or just never done in the first place?

Did you see anything that gave you the dates of this journey?

I'll definitely get hold of a copy of that book.  I'd read a little online about the work of a Fireman / Greaser / trimmer, and it did indeed seem very hard work.

Again, thanks ever so much - you've been such a great help!

The Crew Agreement was probably lost or destroyed.
If you look at the second photograph, (details of voyage) it give dates and places of arrivals and sailings. The voyage commenced in Northfleet 21/06/1907 and finished at Barry 07/03/1908.
