Susan Steel nee Gibbs abt 1798

Hi could anyone help with this brickwall.


Susan married Wm Steel 1817 Buckinghamshire I have Susan later married  John Oswell at Tingewick. Census states she was Rousham Oxfordshire. From the third marriage to Thomas Holton in 1858 her father was William Gibbs

However cannot find a baptism or anything further back with this line.

So from your message I take it Susan's maiden name was Gibbs.

I am not hugely familiar with Oxfordshire - but there is a baptism for a Susannah Gibbs on March 22 1801 - abode Shipton - parents William and Sarah Gibbs, in the parish of Shipton under Wychwood.

This may be a ridiculous suggestion of course as I don't know the area -- but did she name a daughter 'Sarah'?

This baptism was amongst the Oxfordshire baptisms on Ancestry,

thank you for your reply to my query I dont think this could be "Susan Gibbs" but thanks,

her first marriage was to William Steel at Buckingham on 24 Nov 1817

her second was to John Oswell at Radclive cum Chackmore on 13 Sep 1829

her third was to Thomas Holton at Radclive cum Chackmore on  8 Apr 1858

died 1871 at Tingewick Buckinghamshire

Her father was William Gibbs a labourer

Was she referred to as a 'minor' on her first marriage?
Who were the witnesses at her marriages? Can any of them be followed up to see if they are siblings etc?

2nd marriage to John Oswell (mis spelt on FindMyPast) at Radclive cum Chackmore (Bucks) listed as widowed 13 Dec 1829

3rd marriage in 1858 to Thomas Holton(Widowed both) Wits re Elizabeth Nicholls and William Nollon

Her christian name was Susanna, in her marriage to William Steel, in 1817, Buckingham. (No mention of being a minor).

Marriage - 24 Nov 1817. by Banns.
William X STEEL, Bachelor otp
Susanna X GIBBS, Spinster otp
Witnesses - Joseph Sotton, William Madkins, Parish Clerk.

Baptism - 13 Feb 1819. Martha daughter of William & Susanna STEEL of Buckingham, Labourer.

Perhaps she was baptised Susanna Gibbs, not Susan.   Just a small detail, but you never know.
