Where to Go Next Wiliam Knight, born I believe in Hampshire
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 09:12 BST (UK) »
How to find out more. My 3x GGfather is a mystery. He must have been born in the late 1700's. I know his marriage date and where. I know his approximate date of death. Between his birth and marriage I know nothing. His wife's details I have discovered. He was Wiliam Knight, born I believe in Hampshire. A Last Maker by trade. And that is it. I live outside of the UK and subscribe to Ancestry so I cannot travel to records office etc. Any ideas? This is really annoying as my maternal line has been traced back to the 1500's

Have you tried looking for a will? (I don't have any Hampshire lines so can't suggest where to find them though). Sometimes you get extra bits of information- one of mine recently mentioned a daughter of a first wife that we didn't know about. Another of mine mentions a niece, the daughter of his brother. One small nugget of information can lead to others.

If you can find his burial, then an age at death will give you a better idea of when he was born.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Why not try posting on the Hampshire board?

Knight??   Try Knightroots.

Sorry, probably bad advice - could lead to confusion in threads.

The GRO Index Search now has ages at death for almost every death between 1837 and 1957.

You need to register on the site; but it's free to use:
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

You can even buy a PDF copy of the Death Certificate for just £6 - it is sent electronically.

So, I would find his death, from which you will get an age at death.
That should give you a clue to his year of birth.

Censuses should give some clues as to his place of birth.

What is his wife's name and where did he marry?

His wife was Rachel Cresdee or Crisdee, it varies. They were married 12 Oct 1802 at Holy Trinity Church Millbrook S'hampton, register number 195, witnesses Sarah Cogwell and James Martin (not the chef!). I can find no relatives with these surnames.
