« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 10:10 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm seeking some people who posted in March 2017 regarding CHEGWEDDEN..line.
Nugent; cupoflife; cando;
My cousin printed some of your post and after viewing it I thought it irrelevant until I realised that you are seeking information relating to my family line.  I have now sorted out the Walsh connection if you would like to contact me I can fill you in.  That is assuming you haven't solved the puzzle yourself.

Hello Freya

Well you are 'awake' but it seems that Lesley has gone offline at the moment.   ::)

Hopefully she will get notification of posts and say hello herself.   :)

Unfortunately I can't send Lesley a pm as she has only made one post and she needs to make three plus to receive messages.  :(

Just have to hope that she gets alerted to replies or decides to have a look herself.

Hello Freya, apologies for delay. I'm finding it quite difficult to find my way around this service.
I'll try and give you the picture.
Richard Henry robins Chegwedden aka Henry robins, came out from Cornwall on ship Eden, he got ten years for theft but conditionally pardoned on arrival in 1849. He was a pentonvillains exile. Married Margaret Morrison in 1854. Three kids, Margaret (my g gran) John and Susan (spinster)
John married Margaret Henry and had six kids plus two adoptions, Claude and Bertie  curran.
Richard disappears in circa 1859 and Margaret hooks up with Joseph Walsh (with her three youngsters who retain Chegwedden surname) couldn't marry as Richard must have been still alive, I suspect he returned to Cornwall... subsequent births are Mary, flora and Jane Walsh.
Margaret's son John Chegwedden was commonly know as a Walsh and although he used his legal name for marriage, it seems he and family were known as Walsh. Fair enough as he grew up with Joseph as his father. Margaret Henry is buried in Warrnambool cemetery as Chegwedden Walsh. Am currently confirming that.
"Oh what a complex web we weave" lol
Regards
Lesley, Orbost

Yes I have the same sort of story...
Except I have been researching the two Curran's... Who's mother was Margaret Curran Hailstone and Berty were born out of wedlock...
1. Hallstone, Claude Curran/Walsh
Adopted out to Walsh family, father may of been a John Walsh, in his obit, yet to site baptismal cert but other members of the Curran family say the father is noted on baptismal cert!
Claude Hallastone Walsh

Trooper Claude Hallastone Walsh
Service number: 22
Unit: 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment
Date of death: 07 August 1915
Commemorated on: Panel 6
Conflict: First World War, 1914-1918

? 1/2 brother  Richard Henry Walsh
Service Number: 7320
Place of Birth: Warrnambool, VIC, Australia
Place of Enlistment: Warrnambool, VIC, Australia
Next of Kin: Walsh, John (father)

He died  @ Gallipoli..

2.Berty Curran/Walsh b. 1896 Woodford, Victoria
Brought up as a Walsh father may of been a John Walsh??yet to site baptismal cert but other members of the Curran family say the father is noted on baptismal cert!
Birth Record of Berty Curran Born to Curran and Margaret Curran
I can trace him in Koroit, Victoria until 1930 after that no idea...

Mother of Hailstone and Bertie:
Margarets T Curran’s first child born out of wedlock was named Ada Curran it is said that father was noted on Baptismal record as Russell yet to site this, Russell was her brother in-law!
Family Story
The family story is that Margaret HENRY born c1858 was employed by John CURRAN as a maid and at the time of his wife's death in 1875, the boys were 9 and 7 and  the girls were 6, 3 and new born.  Margaret would have been c17 years at that time. Margaret Henry, whom the children called mother Henry,  the housekeeper....... looked after the Curran children until  she Henry Marrried, she becomes Mrs John Chegdwidden

In 1884 Margaret HENRY aged c26 years marries.
Margaret Curran's children..
It would seem that the first child born out of wed lock was brought up by the Curran's.
Because of Margaret Curran's family shame, Margaret Henry now gives shelter to Margaret Curran who works as a house maid for (Her) Margaret Chedgewidden/Walsh family

It would seem the two other children born to Margaret Curran out of wedlock were fathered by a John Walsh hence ?adoption by Mother Henry and John Walsh....O boy it's all very messy lol!
Mother Henry: Death: 1933 #13411 Margt CHEDGEWIDDEN; Father's name: HENRY, Edwd Jno; Mother's name: Ellen (Carrigan); Place of death: Wbool; Age; 74
