John Marshall, Sheriff Hutton, North Yorkshire
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 20:08 BST (UK) »
Good Evening everyone,
It's been a long time...… I've been learning how to crochet, but now I'm back on my family history.

I've got back as far as John Marshall who married a Jane Burrell in 1819 in Sheriff Hutton. I have been trying to find him on the 1841 census but have had no luck.

My John Marshall has 3 children Jane Burrell Marshall 1822, John Burrell Marshall 1823 and Richard Burrell Marshall 1825. All children christened in Sheriff Hutton. They are all proving elusive on the 1841 census.

I have found a John Marshall on the 1841 census married to a Jane living in Sheriff Hutton with 3 children, William 1817-1821, Jane 1822-1826 and John 1822-1826.

I know I am probably clutching at straws to think that they could be the same John Marshall, but I have run out of ideas on where to look. If they are the same person then it is possible that he was born in Raskelf on 6 August 1787 to Richard Marshall (born 1753 Kirby Moorside) and Esther Hodgson (born 1757 Raskelf) but as I say it's probably just wishful thinking on my part.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you, Carrie  :D ???

The baptism records for the three Burrell Marshall children have John as a carpenter, a wright and a carpenter. The 1841 census record you found lists John as a joiner so this may be the same family. There are more baptisms in Sheriff Hutton with John Marshall as father; William 26 Mar 1820 (labourer), Margaret 29 Apr 1821 (labourer) and Jane 27 May 1821 (wright)
Newson, Steavenson, Walker, Taylor, Dobson, Gardner, Clark, Wilson, Smith, Crossland, Goldfinch, Burnett, Hebdon, Peers, Strother, Askew, Bower, Beckwith, Patton, White, Turner, Nelson, Gilpin, Tomlinson, Thompson, Spedding, Wilkes, Carr, Butterfield, Ormandy, Wilkinson, Cocking, Glover, Pennington, Bowker, Kitching, Langhorn, Haworth, Kirkham.

Did John have a brother named George? A George Marshall & wife Elizabeth is next door in both 1841 & 1851. He was born 1788 Raskelf and baptised a daughter Esther 2nd October 1825, Sheriff Hutton

Thank you very much for all your help cristeen.

I have found a George Marshall baptised 27 December 1789 in Raskelf who married on 3rd August 1818 an Elizabeth Stevenson b1794 Easingwold. He is an agricultural labourer and has several children, not all survived childhood: Esther bap 3 Oct 1819- bur 21 Dec 1822, William bap 25 May 1823, Esther bap 2 Oct 1825- bur 21 March 1827, George bap 29 June 1828, Elizabeth bap 28 Dec 1830, Ann bap 29 Dec 1833, Jane b1834, Ann b 1837 and John b 1840. They were all born and baptised in Sheriff Hutton.

By the 1861 census he is a farmer of 11 acres and has a granddaughter living with him: an Ann Marshall b 1857 in Sherriff Hutton ( parentage as yet undiscovered )
