Mitchell family St Leonards, Sussex
« on: Thursday 09 August 18 00:59 BST (UK) »
Hi all, a little while back we started some work on our family tree here in Australia. My great grandfather was Frank Brown, or so we thought. Turns out he was Ernest Mitchell born 02/06/1882 Birmingham, West Midlands. He had 10 siblings, William, George, Emily, Walter, Frederic, Herbert, Lillian, Mabel, Minnie and Maude. All born in St Leonards except William who was the eldest born in 1875 in Ninfield Sussex. His parents were Mary Ann Rachel Mitchell 1862 Brakland, Kent and father was Walter Mitchell 1853, Warburton, Sussex.

Any info appreciated
Wayne

Hi and welcome to RootsChat  :D

This appears to be the family you are referring to in 1891, but the census details do not match what you are saying.  Where has your information come from?

It appears that Mary's maiden surname was VIDLER and the children were all registered in the district of Hastings.

Welcome from me too :)

I agree with Debra that your starting information seems to have got a bit muddled.  The Ernest in the St Leonards family was Ernest Charles Mitchell, mother’s maiden name Vidler, whose birth was registered Mar qtr 1891 St Leonards.

So if your Ernest was born in Birmingham in 1882, then he’s a different person.  To help us to help you, can you tell us more about your Frank Brown, and why he is thought to have been born as Ernest Mitchell?

That looks like someone’s family tree research, which perhaps they have uploaded to Ancestry but that doesn’t make it reliable or correct.  Unfortunately there’s a lot of mistaken family research online, and as we have seen it only takes a few minutes to demonstrate that the Ernest Mitchell who was part of the St Leonards family was not born in Birmingham in 1882.

I think you need to go back to the drawing board and take the research step by step, starting with what is known about Francis/Frank Brown in Australia and what evidence there is that he started life as Ernest Mitchell.  If you can tell us more about Frank then we will be in a better position to help you with that.

There is only one Ernest Mitchell born in Birmingham between 1880 and 1884:-

MITCHELL, ERNEST       BERRY
GRO Reference: 1881  J Quarter in BIRMINGHAM  Volume 06D  Page 47

And it looks as though he has died:-

Deaths Jun 1881
MITCHELL    Ernest    0    Birmingham    6d   19

So as has been said, you will need to recheck your information regarding Frank Brown.
