Irish Marriages and Births re British Soldiers
« on: Thursday 09 August 18 11:10 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I have an ancestor called Charles Arnold who was in the British army until 1852. According to the 1861 census his wife Catherine was born in Dublin and their son William was born in Cork in about 1845.

Catherine's maiden name on subsequent English birth registrations is shown as "Cohoone" (I'm sure that there may be a number of ways of spelling that).

Charles was in barracks in Nottingham in the 1841 census so I assume that the marriage might have taken place between 1841 and 1846 but I have no proof of that.

Is it possible for me to find marriage details for Charles and Catherine (assuming that they married in Ireland) and birth details for their son William?

I have what I can find of Charles' army record but there is no mention in that of his marriage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Newwriter

Well, after lots of searching before I posted this request in a matter of a couple of minutes after posting it I have managed to find the marriage on a site called IrishGenealogy.ie

They were in fact married in 1935 so there goes my theory of 1841-1846.

I am still looking for birth details for Catherine (shown as Cohoon on the marriage register) and for William Arnold. There is a Catherine Cohoon baptised in 1819 but unless she was baptised quite a few years after birth that would make her only 16 at her marriage. The father's name does match the witness at the wedding though.

Thanks for your interest.

For reference here's a link to the marriage- luckily the church record survives and is online because they married before the start of civil registration-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

You may want to amend the date in your second post, the year was 1835 not 1935 ;D
