Matlock Wills
« on: Friday 10 August 18 19:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

I would like to have brief details, especially names, mentioned in the will of Thomas FOWKE 1612 Matlock, which is listed on a genealogy website to which I don't have a sub if that is possible please?  (Staffordshire, Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry Wills & Probate 1521-1860).

Many thanks

Over and above the call of duty Bookbox!  :) well done.
I only took note of those mentioned that were related to the said Thomas Fowke.

By the way Designer Jeans, even if you don't have a sub to the foresaid website, you may find your local library does, and you can access wills at Lichfield (which includes Derbyshire), for free through them.
I don't know where in the world you are, but I can do that in New Zealand.

Well, I've just got up, but am not sure if I haven't died and gone to heaven!  Thank you so very much Bookbox for taking the time and trouble to help with a will that exceeds even my most optimistic expectations.  I simply cannot thank you enough.

Unfortunately I'm a good distance away from Lichfield and sadly Library cuts in the UK are taking their toll.

It was my pleasure, as it was displacement therapy for something else I should have been doing.

I should also have clarified that a detailed inventory (value as given above) is on file with the will, should you want to look at it later.

This is being incredibly cheeky and really pushing my luck ...

There is also the will of Mary Fowke (presumably Thomas' widow) also dated 1612 Matlock

Long live displacement activity!

Sadly, there is no will for Mary Fowke – she died intestate. The Calendar entry for her leads to a grant of letters of administration, made at Lichfield on 26 May 1612 to Henry Gee, who was her brother. It’s a fairly lengthy document, in a difficult hand, and in heavily abbreviated Latin, so it will take me a while, and it may not add anything beyond the legal jargon.

There are also short, straightforward entries (in Latin) in the Act Book for both Thomas Fowke and Mary.

Crumbs Bookbox I didn't realise you were having to transcribe these documents.  Thank you so much.

You are clearly a lot more knowledgeable than me - I'm getting confused with dates, the first document, Thomas' will is 1st June, with probate being granted on the 27th May.  The admin for Mary is 26th May?

Also I have no idea what an Act Book is?
