Rev. John Pengwern Jones, Llangollen
« on: Saturday 11 August 18 00:54 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for details on my great-grandfather. He had two wives, first married to a Jane Powell (1865-1887) who died in India and later he married again as a missionary in India.
He was born on 13th June, 1859 to David and Mary Jones. Does anyone know if he had a brother (William?) and any details of his family?

Welcome to RootsChat ;D

For starters, here is the 1911 census, from FamilySearch:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW6T-HW7

(You have to register to see it, but FamilySearch is free to use!)

It's the only census where he is identified specifically.
I presume that, on other censuses he is simply John Jones?

Possible 1871 census, with a brother William:

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Hello  :)
there a a few mentions of John Pengwern Jones in a number of newspaper articles available free (Welsh Newspapers Online) http://newspapers.library.wales/home
There is a notice of his wife Jenny from cholera (I am assuming this is the Jane you mention) in January 1886?

This is a notice of his mothers death in 1906

There's a large piece in Welsh on the death of his first wife on 4 Dec 1887. They had married the previous summer and by the sound of it not long arrived in India whn she was taken ill. She's described as the daughter of Mr. Powell, Lloegr Farm, Pontfaen, near Brecon

The Jones family aren't easy to trace. I think mother Mary is in Princess St Llangollen in 1891 & 1901, with daughter Jane (the obits for Mary Jones in  1906 mention Rev J Pengwern Jones has only one sister remaining). She looks to be alone in 1881. Can;t find any of them in 1861

Thanks for all the help.

So from what I gather, JP only had a sister named Jane, instead of a brother named William?

Not necessarily. He only has a sister surviving  when his mother dies in 1906, but that doesn't rule out there being other siblings who die before their mother. He appears to have brother William on 1871 in Pengwern (sister Jane absent).

There was a Jane Pengwern Jones born in the 1850s, whose father was David Jones and mother Mary Williams, who ended up in Argentina. The problem it says is that her mother also died in Argentina.
Our Jones ancestors were not very original with their names. Too many named the same.
My dad's and my DNA test is also iffy as his father was supposedly adopted by JP Jones, but according to the family of his second wife, JP put it about and from what I can trace, my grandfather is actually related instead of merely being adopted.

Jane Pengwern lives and dies in Llangollen at the same address as the mother of John Pengwern. Not sure who the Argentinians are!

In the obit of the second Mrs John Pengwern it mentions that she left a crowd of children behind, some of which were adopted

Another item mentions that John P is related to the Rev Hugh Davies  - unhelpfully with no location to narrow down the options!
