Annie Wright born Annie Smith 1871 Claypole near Newark (Lincs/Notts)
« on: Sunday 12 August 18 15:18 BST (UK) »
I’m hoping someone may be able to help me trace which Annie Smith is my great grandmother. I have found a mixture of information about several possible Annie Smiths

This is the information I have about her:

She married William Markham Wright (born Wrangle 1868) on 12th May, 1892 at Marnham, Nottinghamshire. They were living in Skegby, Normanton at this time; her father is not named on the marriage certificate; one of the witnesses is Betsy Smith-possibly a sister.

In 1939 she is living in Mansfield Nottinghamshire and her dob is given as 19 November, 1871. Apparently there are 2 Annie Smiths registered for this time in Claypole but neither with this birth date. I have no contact with this side of the family as my grandfather died long before I was born and  I no longer live in the area. I am also confused as another Annie Smith appears to have been born at a similar time in the area where she was married.

William and Annie Wright’s children include
Alice b 1892
Miriam Annie b 1894
John William b 1896
Thomas Richard b 1897
Ernest b 1899
Arthur Herbert b1839
Elsie b 1903
Leonard Markham b1909

Thank you for any help

Hello and welcome to Rootschat  :)

As there is no father's name on her marriage certificate that could mean she was illegitmate

As to the two birth's registered in Newark (Claypole is in this reg district) they appear to have the same reference numbers - was she entered twice  :-\

Given her dob she would have been registered in the December quarter looking at GRO indexes there is no mother's maiden name it's left blank - again indicating that this person is illegitimate

Could it be that the witness Betsy Smith may have been her mother

Here's an entry on 1881 census for an Annie Smith with her sibling Betsy Smith their mother Charlotte Smith is noted as unmarried

1881 RG11; Piece: 3304; Folio: 56; Page: 1 - Village Street
Charlotte Smith   31 Balderton, Nottinghamshire charwoman
Annie Smith   10 Balderton, Nottinghamshire
Betsey Smith   6   Balderton, Nottinghamshire
Thomas Smith   3   Marnham, Nottinghamshire

1871 RG10; Piece: 3540; Folio: 28; Page: 4 -  head household Thomas Morris
Charlotte Smith 23 Balderton, Nottinghamshire servant

ADDED - this appears to be Charlotte on later censuses

1891 RG12; Piece: 2642; Folio: 50; Page: 8
Charlotte Smith 43 single Balderton, Nottinghamshire
Kate Smith 9 Normanton on Trent, Nottinghamshire
John Smith3 Normanton on Trent, Nottinghamshire

1901 RG13; Piece: 3123; Folio: 57; Page: 11 – The Village
Charlotte Parkin Smith 53 S Balderton, Nottinghamshire monthly nurse
Kate Smith dau 19 Normanton on , Nottinghamshire
John Smith son 13 Normanton on Trent, Nottinghamshire
Ernest Smith Gd son 4 months

Charlotte's surname is Smith on original census the person above is named Charlotte Parkin

Possibly Ernest birth entry from GRO indexes again no mother's maiden name - might be son of Kate

Thank you. This is some of the confusing mix of information I too have come across.

Initially I found an Annie Smith on an 1881 census as a daughter of Francis and Ann Smith shown as born at Claypole but living in Newark (there was a workhouse at Claypole).

The 2 registered births you noted have different mothers - Charlotte and Emily- also in this household and old enough to have children so I therefore wondered if Francis and Ann were actually her grandparents. My instincts tend to go towards Charlotte as she is found in Marnham.

I think 1901 looks more like Normanton, I can’t find a place called Wormington, Notts.

Interestingly Charlotte Parkin turns up in 1911 Census in  Mansfield where Annie is living.

I agree too  :)

I added two census entries for Charlotte Smith 1891/1901 and the 1851 census has
this entry

1851 HO107; Piece: 2138; Folio: 42; Page: 14;
Willm Smith   46
Mary Smith   46
Sarah Smith   22
Thos Smith   17
Joseph Smith   14
Betsy Smith dau   8
Robert Smith gdson   7
Sarah Ann Smith gddau   2
Charlotte Smith granddaughter 18 Mo Balderton, Nottinghamshire

possible birth entry from GRO again no mmn

SMITH, CHARLOTTE       -
1849  J Quarter in OF THE NEWARK UNION  Volume 15  Page 613

I haven't yet looked on GRO for birth entries for
Betsey Smith, Thomas Smith, Kate Smith & John Smith
to see if the mmn has been left blank
