Probably Retford
Annie is 21 on marriage certificate, spinster, no profession and living in Skegby.  I only have a copy from GRO. Other witness is her husband’ s brother John Thomas Wright

Probably Retford

So no other clues to go on :-\

1891 c I think she's a servant - Head of household Ann Rhodes
RG12; Piece: 2642; Folio: 60; Page: 9

Betsy Smith 16 Balderton, Nottinghamshire
Residence Place:   Marnham, Marnham, Nottinghamshire, England

for info. - this looks to be the Betsy from 1891 census above

posting info. in case it does turn out to be Annie's sister as there is no firm evidence

other than a Betsy Smith witnesses Annie Smith's marriage
and there is an
Annie & Betsy Smith siblings with their unmarried mother Charlotte Smith together on the census
there’s no fathers name recorded on Annie’s m/c - would suggest illegitimate
on census with husband Annies birth place is given as

Annie Wright bn c1872 Claypole Newmarket Lincolnshire
Annie Wright bn c1872 Normanton Nottinghamshire

Thomas Falconbridge27
Betsy Falconbridge 26 Balderson, Nottinghamshire

they have children Evelyn 1910, Harold 1907 & Thomas 1906

Betsy Faulconbridge Death Age:   63
Sep 1938 NottinghamVolume:   7b Page:   310

If Betsy Smith signed her name on Annie's marriage certificate the only thing I can think of is if you obtain  this Betsy Smith's m/c to see if the signatures matched but it is a long shot.........

 Sep 1899
FALCONBRIDGE    Thomas    E. Retford    7b   23
SMITH    Betsy        E. Retford    7b   23

ADDED

You could try looking to see if there’s an Annie Smith bn c 1872 Nottingham/Lincolnshire daughter with an unmarried mother called Betsy/Elizabeth Smith on 1881 census

See reply 1 for possible birth entry 1872 Newark Annie Smith - no mmn on GRO

See reply 3 for possible 1881 census entry Annie bn c1871 Balderton, Nottinghamshire & Betsy Smith as siblings, single mother Charlotte Smith bn c1850

See reply 11 for 1881 census for an Annie Smith bn 1872 parents Francis & Ann, they also have a dau named Charlotte bn c1850 Balderton, Nottinghamshire (see 1851 c) but Charlotte isnot with the family in 1881 - I think this Charlotte may have married a Joseph Corah

Thought I'd recheck as you gave Annie Wright nee Smith’s dob from 1939 register as
19 November, 1871 – so she was probably registered in December quarter 1871 or possibly March quarter 1872

These are the only Annie Smith’s  that show on FreeBMD searching Nottingham
Dec 1871 – Mar 1872

Dec 1871
Smith    Annie        E. Retford    7b   16

Smith    Annie        Newark    7b   337

Smith    Annie        Newark    7b   337

Mar 1872
SMITH    Annie        Nottingham    7b   262

And these are the corresponding entries on GRO indexes

SMITH, ANNIE    mmn   WHITLAM
1871  D Quarter in EAST RETFORD  Volume 07B  Page 16

SMITH, ANNIE       -      (Blank)

SMITH, ANNIE    mmn SAVAGER
1872  M Quarter in NOTTINGHAM  Volume 07B  Page 262

FreeBMD has these marriage entries

Mar 1871
Smith    Edwin        E. Retford    7b   5
Whitlam    Ellen        E. Retford    7b   5

1881 Edwin and Ellen are living in Yorkshire with their dau Annie and her siblings, she doesn't appear to have a sibling named Betsy/Elizabeth

 RG11; Piece: 4654; Folio: 67; Page: 41
Edwin Smith   35
Ellen Smith   31
Annie Smith   9 East Retford, Nottinghamshire

Just had another thought could she have been registered as just ANN rather than Annie Smith

deleted as they were marriages rather than births  ::)

As a newcomer to Rootschat I have been impressed and delighted in how helpful people are. Thank you.

Most of the findings have given me confidence in my own research skills as most info has duplicated my own research and it seemed like I had come to a standstill with the two Newark and the E.Retford Annies who all seem to be illegitimate.
Following other people's train of thought has however opened up ideas for other pathways that could be investigated e.g. looking at possible family links in a broader way, trying to find out if any of the families we are focusing on are related....  I have not really travelled back along the Smith line in the Newark area as there seemed to be such a lot of them!
