So if I have this right, George Cleverly married an Eliza Smith, spinster age 17, in 1892. They had four children and then she died in 1904.  In July 1904 he married an Eliza Smith, widow, and it is them who can be found on the 1911 census.

It didn’t help that both Elizas were born in the same year.

Thank you to all who have responded and solved my query.

I am just wondering if Eliza Rutty Smith who married George Cleverley was the widow of George's first wife Eliza's brother - so Eliza Rutty may have married her sister in laws widower
Just checking some things -back shortly

On the 1901 census with George and Eliza No 1 is an Isaac Smith age 18. He must be Eliza’s brother and it ties in with Suzard’s lat post.

Marriage Parish Church Manningford Bohune
22 Oct 1898
Herbert Alfred Smith 21 Bachelor labourer father Herbert Alfred Smith occ labourer
Eliza Rutty 24? Spinster father Robert Rutty master of Devizes Lunatic Asylum
witness George Sawyer & Sarah Sawyer? difficult to read

I really think this is Eliza Smith -George Cleverley's first wife's brother
Correct age correct father

So Eliza Rutty /smith who became George Cleverley's wife would become  stepmother to her nieces and nephews

I can't find any Cleverly /Rutty birth regs - so am assuming if the cleverly children are in your tree then the mother is Eliza Smith not Rutty

Opinions please

I agree - Eliza nee Rutty didn’t have any children (and indeed says so  :) ).  Can’t see any post-1911 either.

The mother of the four children must be Eliza Eddna (nee Smith), the first wife.  If you check the General Register Office online site, the births all show Smith as the mother’s maiden name.
