Her birth was registered as plain Lotty Tuckwood - so was 'Carrington' added at baptism as gesture towards Edwin and Charlotte?   Her parents had a number of children including an Edwin b.1890.

I can't seem to find Charles and Eliza Tuckwood on 1891 census to establish whether 'Lottie' was with them or not.

I think I found them took some digging around trying to find Clarence St. as per 1889 baptism
address for Lottie Carrington Tuckwood there is NO Lottie with Charles & family

I used Rosella Tuckwood as she had same surname

found Charles & family on page 31 of 57 living at 99 Clarence St

Interestingly in 1881 (when Eliza and her children are with her sister) there is a 25 yr old Notts-born Charles Tuckwood lodging in Mile End, London, “unmarried”, and a scenic artist.

Could this be Eliza’s husband, having temporarily abandoned his usual life and off on a creative frolic?

There’s quite a gap in births around 1881, in the otherwise fertile Tuckwood/Brooksby marriage:

Dec qtr 1875: Ada Ellen
Sep qtr 1878: Charles Edgar (died 1885)
Mar qtr 1883: Lotty
Sep qtr 1884: Kate
Mar qtr 1886: Edith
Sep qtr 1888: Walter
Dec qtr 1890: Edwin
Mar qtr 1893: Charles
Mar qtr 1895: Leonard (died 1897)
Sep qtr 1896: Claud
Jun qtr 1899: Rose

If there was a period of marital estrangement, that might have something to do with why Lotty was brought up by relatives.  Perhaps, though this can only be speculation, she was conceived during Charles’ absence?

As far as I was aware, Charles 1854(Eliza) p.o.b was Radford in Nottingham, son of George / Rebecca.

Yes, that’s the only Notts birth reg of a Charles Tuckwood at around the right time.  The 1891 apparent anomaly is likely to be just a lazy ditto - he seems to have been added as an afterthought.

CONCLUSION.

I think that you are right ,Annette, Lottie(Charlotte) was not Charles's child so Eliza gave her to Charlotte and Edwin to bring up as their own but still retaining the Tuckwood surname.

We will never know, but things happened then that defy explanation.

Many thanks for all your help.

Maggie

birth registered as Lotty Tuckwood 1882 and Lottie Carrington Tuckwood was not baptized until 1889,
some 7 years later at St Alban's Nottingham -
perhaps this is when Charlotte (Lotty) went to live with her Aunt Charlotte Carrington nee Tuckwood - as you say we'll never know

Freereg doesn’t appear to have bapt of these Tuckwood children of Charles & Eliza Ann
Edwin 1890, Claud 1896  or Rosa 1899

Charles & Eliza's other children
Ada Ellen, Charles Edgar, Edith, Kate and Walter were all Bp. at St Stephen's Nottingham where Charles Tuckwood & Eliza Ann Brooksby married in 1875

Charles Tuckwood certainly had a variety of occupations on their baptism records
dropper maker, cricketer, screw maker & smith and
dropper maker (1891c)
cycle maker     (1901c) &
Comb maker     (1911)
1901 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSNF-8FS
1911 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWSX-YN4

I wonder what details are given on the 1882 birth cert. for Lotty Tuckwood ie parents names,
and who was the informant on Lotty Tuckwood's death in 1910 (burial Nottingham 15 November 1910)

Unfortunately there's no record on find a grave to see if she's buried with any family member/s ie
Tuckwood or Carrington
