Narrowing down Birth Info

Hi there,

I'm trying to track down a relative and *think* I've narrowed it down to 3 possible records. Will I have to bite the bullet and order all 3 or is there a way of being more certain?

Where are you looking? The GRO site gives maiden names if that helps.

You don't say when they are.  If before 1911 are you using the GRO index with mothers maiden name showing.  Have you any idea who the parent is ....

Yes - I'm fairly sure (95%) it's 1910. From 1939 Role info he says his OB is 31.01.1910 which makes him most likely a James Bolton W.Derby 8b 320 Jun 10 record. However, can't rule out in the same section James Bolton Liverpool 8b 98 and a little later James Edward Bolton W Derby 8b 331 Jun 1910 (although he's an outsider as Edward seems not in keeping with other family names..)

His Mother was Alice Brown. James Bolton was illegitimate. I'm guessing 'Bolton' was the Father's name but at the mo, it's only a guess!

  I was using the Free BMD site!

FreeBMD has a good and fairly flexible search function, so it makes sense to use that first and then put possible entries into GRO Online so as to identify mother's maiden name (births) and age (deaths).
