Can anyone identify his regiment?
« on: Wednesday 15 August 18 11:15 BST (UK) »
My Great Granda, Robert Gordon, a carter/ delivery man ,  joined up in Aberdeen at the start of the War. Never spoke about his experiences except once , after a few whiskies at New Year, where he wept telling the story to my Granda of how he had woken up after falling asleep exhausted and found his 'pillow' was the body of dead soldier. A taciturn man, this was the only time he ever shared what had happened to him.
He lived many years, a tallish, thin man who never lost his magnificent 'tache. He died aged 85 in 1970. I have a photo of him taken in 1915 ( says on the back) Perhaps someone can let me know which regiment he served in?

Many thanks for your prompt reply. What were the main clues in the picture that gave you the answer, may I ask?

The RA cap badge is very distinctive.
I can't see a service record for him but there about 20 Medal cards for a Robert Gordon RA.
Did he have a middle name which might narrow it down?

A Jim1 says - one or other of the three branches of the Royal Artillery, each of which -  Royal Horse, Royal Field and Royal Garrison had horses (the last many fewer than the other two and I'd plump for RHA). The shoulder titles if we could see them clearly would tell us.

No obvious identifiable records found among the many Robert Gordons who served in the Gunners.  Any medals in the family?  They would have his number engraved.  He joined in Aberdeen but was that where he lived?  Any second name?

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

He would have joined up in Aberdeen ( where he lived and worked) he was married with three or four children by then, wife's name Margaret. No middle name as far as I know.

Clutching at straws, if you discount all the RGA men & those with middle initials & those with a 1914 entry date brings the list down considerably. Add to this men with 6 digit TF numbers leaves about 3.
I think you will have to content yourself with at least knowing who he served with.
Even with a service record it's hard to track RA men as Brigades were constantly being broken up sent to other Brigades & re-numbered.
