Foleshill ancestor
« on: Thursday 16 August 18 10:14 BST (UK) »
My third x great grandfather, George Whitehall, on the Scottish census for 1861 is shown as born in Warwickshire (Foschell) ??   Later on it seems it is Foleshill.  I am struggling to find a birth record on line for George.  George was born around 1806 and it appears he was a drummer in the 72nd Regiment of Foot in 1822.  The census also shows him as a town drummer in Perth, Scotland, where he lived and died.   Can anyone help please?

George Whithall, as noted on the OPR & his wife Mary had the following children baptised at Foleshill, St Laurence all on the same day 22 Jan 1811, no birth dates listed.

George, Hannah,  Mary, Thomas, & William.

In the same period a number of other Whithall’s also had children baptised there.

According to his Army discharge papers he joined the Army 14 Feb 1822 aged 17,born Forsall, Warwickshire, occupation Ribbon Weaver. He was discharged in Dublin 12 April 1845 after 22 years and 2 months service due to Chronic Rheumatism. All his Army service was in the UK.

I can only find one baptism in Foleshill

George Whitall bapt. 22 January 1811 parents George and Mary.

This is on FreeReg and the same couple also baptised Thomas, Hannah, William and Mary on the same day. Unfortunately no dates of birth given.

Gentle people many thanks for your help. I have more work to do, as I've looked at the army discharge paperwork for No 251 George Whitehall Drummer 73rd foot as suggested by "emeltom" and his signature is "Whitehall" so I'm even more confused. I'm going to Foleshill in September, and wondered if the actual parish records are available, just in case they've been mis-transcribed!! Any thoughts.

I wouldn't worry too much with regard to the spelling of the surname. In a lot of cases the person writing things down wrote down what they thought they heard. You also have to allow for regional accents and do remember that all names are not necessarily pronounced the way they are spelt eg Beauchamp and Mainwaring. You want to see all the variations I have for the name Smurthwaite - ranging from Smurfit to Smoorfoot to Smaithwaite, yet they are all different generations of the same family.

Hi Colin
The George Whittall marrying Mary Southen in Dec 1800 are as elusive as ever.
Without giving up your trade secrets, would be able to point me in the right direction to find this record, as I've been on "Forebears.co.uk (free warwickshire site) looking for them in Bulkington without any mention of them.
Regards
Gordon W Battle

If you have an Ancestry sub it's here:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ml4/
He signs his name Witthall & her Southen.
The Vicar spells it Whittal & her Southorn.
Looking at other events in Foleshill including the 1841 census the name appears to be Whitehall as indicated earlier.
Ancestry has mistranscribed some of them as Whitchard. Others have been spelt Whittall.
I also notice there are 3 more possible children to George & Mary, Eliza Whitehall 1815; John Whithall 1816 & Anne 1819 Occ: weaver & add: Little Heath for 2 & Partings for Anne.
All on ancestry.
1841 Little Heath:
HO107; Piece: 1154; Book: 6; Folio: 44; Page: 4
Mary Whitehall 64
Mary Whitehall 11
Ann Whitehall 22
George Whitehall 12
Mary 11 & George 12 are the children of William who was one of the multiple Baptisms in 1811.
