Photo restoration/coloring Timothy Hill
« on: Thursday 16 August 18 22:33 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
Attached is a photograph of my either gggggrandfather or ggggggrandfather, both called Timothy Hill.
Dressed in his clothes as the town crier of Wolverhampton (not sure whats going with his left hand as it doesnt appear to be visible, possibly holding bell at a weird angle).
I have been told the photo is around 1850s by the wonderful gentlemen who sent it me, but that could be a rough estimate as im no expert either.
If not sure if the image attatched is too small but i shall attempt to acquire larger version if possible.
Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Joel

Hi Joel and welcome to RootsChat....I would suggest this was an 1860s photo but for a more accurate date we would need to see the whole photo including the back. I see a bell too...maybe a town Cryer.I detect a posing stand too.

Thanks Carol!
i have the back somewhere i shall look tomorrow.
1860s would just about fit as i believe (the elder) Timothy died in 1859 so this could of been taken around then and he was indeed a town crier!

It could be be his son then and could be into the 70s...It would be a Carte de Visite and until the early 1870s the corners were square cut after which they became round in order for them to fit more easily into albums.

The elder was born 1813 and the younger was born 1844 if that is of any help!

More likely to be the Father then as he could well be 46 years of age. Nice clean photo in good condition for its age.

I believe it was purchased as part of collection, it wasnt passed down in the family so it managed to avoid all the wear and tear that many photos suffer

Looks like he was in prison for four months in 1839....the offence looks like Riot and there are four others who appear to be guilty of the same crime. This chap was also born Abt. 1813 the trial was in Staffordshire.

you're correct he was a trouble maker.
His son was even worse, I have an absolute plethora of criminal records and newspaper attributed to him.
one judge once said "it would be a great service to Wolverhampton if Timothy Hill was to be put into Jail." (paraphrasing)
