Looby
« on: Friday 17 August 18 16:41 BST (UK) »
My great grandmother was a lady called Mary Josephine Looby who married Michael Wilson in 1919 in Tipperary. Mary was born in April 1899 to Margaret Looby and John Fraser who never married. Mary was brought up by her grandmother, also Mary who came over from England sometime between 1877 and 1882.
I want to try and find out who John Fraser was and why the Looby's came over from England.
If anyone can help it would be a great help. Thank you

For reference-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Clonmel_West_Urban/Phelan_s_Lane/1711714

There are a lot of Loobys in Tipperary- perhaps the family were originally Irish?

Are you sure the name was Mary Josephine? in 1911 she seems to be Mary Jane-

Birth registration also says Mary Jane-https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1899/02037/1780506.pdf

I see the confusion. On her birth certificate the father's name is not listed. On the census of 1901 along with her birth certificate she is listed as Mary Jane. Then in 1911 it is Mary J. On her marriage certificate she is down as Mary Josephine which is also on the 1939 census and other records I have obtained. She lists her father at marriage as John Fraser a Labourer.

Do you know the name of grandmother Mary's husband? If he died in Ireland his death should be online. You probably need to search English records (census, births, etc.) to find more about the family.

On her marriage, she seems to sign herself as Mary Joe

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1919/09687/5513447.pdf

There is only one John Fraser, that I can see - married with a family in 1901 and 1911.

Mary J’s father may have been a soldier based in the area.

The siblings are the nearly the same age in 1901 as 1911 so difficult to find births.

And a marriage John Looby and Mary Slattery 1865 Liverpool but I can’t find other children’s births.

There are Catholic baptisms for the above children plus two Michaels- born 1866 and 1873 if you thought these were your family.
