henry john saunders
« on: Friday 17 August 18 17:55 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am researching henry john Saunder

B 1862 Taunton Somerset

D 16/11/1947 ( just after his 2 nd wife died, Ann m Saunders )

He travelled the country as a chief prison warder
In Staffordshire, Glamorgan, hull, and Shepton mallet,

Finishing at wandsworth in London

Is there some record of his service in the prison service

He his buried or cremated at Putney vale

I am trying to find a photo of him ( would the staff considering his position have a photograph of him or a written report of his service )

Regards Phil

Staff records for Wandsworth Prison are held at London Metropolitan Archives, in series ACC/3444/ST. They are not online. They include a few photographic glass plates dating from the 1920s and 1930s.
Email: ask.lma (AT) cityoflondon.gov.uk

For other prisons, try searching the online catalogue for each county record office to find out what records they have, or email them and ask. It will help if you can give them the approximate dates of his service in each location.

On another thread you have his (1st) wife dying in 1907 in Hull. So I guess he came to Shepton after that date? Can you give a rough time frame? (even if only when was he definitely not at Shepton?) Sorry to be picky, but I have bits of information about the prison - I have a photo of the staff in the 1920s (no Saunders listed when the prison closed in 1930) and references to the Chief Warder (no name given) in 1909. I don't want to send you irrelevant information.

Okay. Do you know where he married his wives, and where any children were born or where those family members died? That would give you clues about his movements, and thus the prisons he served in.

He was awarded the I.S.M. (Imperial Service Medal -  awarded on retirement for serving 25 years or more) on 10th Feb 1922. This was recorded in the Edinburgh Gazette for Feb 21 1922 (www.thegazette.co.uk).
He is listed as; Saunders, Henry John, Chief Warder, Class 1, H.M.Prison Wandsworth.

So he probably isn't in the prison staff photo I have for 1922. I have another one from Oct 1921 but he might have left before that as well.

Stuart Wood in his book "Shades of the Prison House" [pub.1932] mentions his incarceration in Shepton Mallet Prison in 1909, and gives passing mention to the Chief Warder - who might be your man.

I'll see what else I can dig out.
