Pauline and William Appleton are in Middlesex in 1871 with 7 children born in 4 different counties.  Pauline still shown as b Norfolk

Elizabeth Meek died Dec qtr 1844 St Faiths Norfolk aged 83.  1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs so she could have been up to 79yrs old in 1841 so need to find a Vining/Meek connection to see if the 1825 marriage is the right one

The film number for the Earsdon baptism is 1526328, but when you search the catalog with that number it brings back 'Parish registers for St. Nicholas' Church, Yarmouth, 1558-1901'

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A1526328

The other film reference - 1545220 - is the Bishops Transcripts for Yarmouth 1773-1841
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A1545220

It looks like they've simply made an error in indexing of the transcripts, and wrongly listed the parish as Earsdon.  I've reported the error.

The newspaper archive has a number of articles in the Norfolk papers in 1844 regarding the case of an attempted poisoning by a Joseph Paul, an artist aged 40 of Catton, Norfolk of his elderly mother,a Mrs Meek. He was found not guilty. I have not read the articles in full but there appears to be a lot of detail.

Articles name his late wife as Mary- if the correct Joseph this would suggest that she was a second wife.

There is a further marriage of a Joseph Paul aged 40, a widower and artist 30th Nov 1845 Sprowston and Beeston St Andrew,Norfolk to a Sarah Ann Nicholls. The image is not totally clear but it looks to my eyes  that one witness was Pauline Emma Paul. No father is named for Joseph on this marriage cert.

Googling Joseph Paul shows him as an artist b 1804 Norfolk died 1887.  1861 for Warwickshire has a Joseph Paul animal painter aged 57 b Hampshire - wife Sarah Ann 34 b Norfolk plus son John Louis 14 b Norfolk

GRO search against sons birth reg shows Sarah's maiden name as Nickall

1845 marriage on freebmd in St Faiths RD between Joseph Paul and Sarah Ann Nickalls

1881 Joseph & Sarah are in London which ties in with this little snippet

You might also find it useful to read the will of Elizabeth Meek-probate date 26 March 1845. Again there is a lot of detail. Joseph Paul seems to be referred to as her godson - Pauline Emma Paul is clearly named in her will. The script is not easy to follow but it may be that an early sentence states "... Joseph Meek Paul who for many years resided with me (the son of my godson Joseph Paul Portrait Painter)."

(The will was proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury and so can be seen on Ancestry).

Just to add that Elizabeth Meek died about a month after the conclusion of the poisoning case in September 1844. Reading an article in the Norfolk Chronicle 10 August 1844 it would appear that it was not fully established during the court case that Joseph was her son, the judge in summing up stating that if he was her son then he was her natural son.

The above article concludes by stating; " The Jury consulted for a short time and returned a verdict of "Not Guilty," apparently much to the surprise of almost everybody in the Court". In summing up the Judge had opined that there was no probability of Joseph obtaining any profit by taking away her life. Her will might suggest otherwise.

Thank you so much, everyone, for your help with this. I was aware of the poisoning case and the connection to Elizabeth Meek. Joseph was quite a one I reckon! :)
