Birth and Death records pre civil registration

Hi,

This is pre Q3 1837.

I'm wondering if anyone has come across any records of birth (other than date in baptism records) or death in their searches.

I know there was no requirement to register before 1837, but I'm curious if any churches or workhouses etc issued any form of documentation for births or deaths (other than baptisms and burials).

Births and Deaths were required by various Acts of Parliament from the 17th century onwards to be recorded by the Church, but many (most) incumbents ignored those laws.

The ones who did comply with the law registered the births and deaths in the Baptism and Burial register(s).

To start the list off:
Date of birth sometimes included in church baptism record -  especially when the child was not a newborn.

Date of death sometimes included in burial record -  but not as useful as you can usually take burial date as being just a short time after the death.

Date of children's birth on the father's army record -  I someone in my tree who was an army captain, moved around the British Isles regularly and the service record contains details of the birth of each of his children (1800-10 period).

Workhouse as you suggest is a good idea although I don't know what proportion have survived.
Newspaper birth and death notices perhaps became common not much before 1837.

One thing not to rely on is age given on marriage.  I have seen so many home-made trees where the husband and wife were both given as born 21 years before they got married and they'd got that from the couple being "of full age" .  Similarly calculating a year of birth from a rounded 1841 census entry can mislead.

I don't particularly wish to lose my gender Jebber.  I can sympathise with those who feel they are the wrong gender but why should we then lose our own genders?

Same sort of thing when a council decided to called Christmas Winterval so as not to offend those of a different faith to Christians.

What are we going to end up with?  A bland country that doesn't wish to offend the minority?

Just my silly thought, triggered by the word 'home-made' which I hadn't come across in this context

Judging by some of the rubbish trees you see online, compiled solely by putting together computer generated hints, without any real research to see if they are the correct people, and then those simply copied from another tree without any research to see if the info is correct or not - then some would say Yes there is a way of obtaining a tree without building your own !!!!!!
