Deleted, just realised the 2nd part of your post wasn't a quote.

Definitely appears to be your Walter!

Poor chap  :(

Not necessarily him. The Liverpool, England connection doesn't add up in my estimation and I don't have access to the English census for 1900 (if he was there then) or city directories for 1909.  Or French death certificates- I wonder how that works?  There was a French newspaper article that thought his cause of death was suicide. Same details as the Australian newspaper notice. A DC might show who claimed the body and where it was interred. Better yet it could name his next of kin or parents. Wishful thinking.

I found a Brindley Street & Close, Liverpool which may help? May have changed name over the yrs from Avenue to Street or possibly just doesn't exist now?

Maybe a post on the Lancashire board would help?

I wonder if being a Ship Owner did he have a will?

I also wonder how they were able to establish who he was i.e. there may have been something in the newspapers mentioning his disappearance but...by whom?

Rosie, Could he have dealt in goods (importing)?

I've had a fumble around but as it's not something I've ever really searched, not getting anywhere & he doesn't seem to be listed on the National Archives.

Very elusive!  ;D

Annie: I took your advice and yesterday emailed the Stirling Council at the address you supplied. And today I received a reply.
Isabella Muirhead was interred in Snowden Cemetery in 1929 and in the same lair lies Robert Brown Neil (1940),  James Muirhead (1943), Annie Neil (1955) and Isabel Neil in Jan. 1967.

I have posted on the Lancashire board in regard to Walter Muirhead.
