Newcastle upon Tyne
« on: Thursday 23 August 18 09:46 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage certificate for St John's Church, Newcastle upon Tyne and it states that these two ancestors lived at Angus Court.  Does anyone know here this was please?  I presume that it was in Newcastle.

Angas' Court was apparently  at 35, Groat Bigg Market. See the map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/424843/564075/13/101248
Change the zoom with the - in the top left. The court is not marked.

UPDATE
Ridley Court which is shown on the map is at 31 Groat Market.
Later map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/424843/564075/13/100511

In 1850 Angas' Court is given as 35 Bigg Market. In the 1858 street directory the Royal Scotch Arms is shown at 35 Bigg Market, so assuming there has been no renumbering of the street Angas' Court will be next to the Royal Scotch Arms as shown on this map  https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/424699/564170/13/101248

Thank you very much Stan, that's brilliant.  I see it's quite close to the Church so I'm thinking they travelled to Newcastle to get married and had to live in the area first.

Thanks again
Lindsey

Thanks very much Stan, I can see exactly where it was now.  Being the same number I would think it was attached to the Royal Scotch Arms which is more evidence that the couple didn't actually live in Newcastle but stayed there while getting married.  I will be in Newcastle on Sunday so will walk down there and see the exact spot.

What was the date of the marriage?  In the 1851 Census 2 Angas' Court is occupied by a Lodging House keeper. In 1861 Angas' Court has apparently been renamed Scotch Arms Yard, and No.3 is a Lodging House.

Sorry for the delay Stan I'm out and just looked at my phone.  The marriage was 1845.  Thanks very much for keeping on with this it's all very interesting.  My husband and I also found the map you sent very interesting we were looking all over the town at the changes that have happened.
