Person died in one county buried in another ?

Not sure where to post this.

From doing some searches, how would I go about looking for info about someone dying in Cheltenham and being buried in Tilton on the Hill (Leicestershire).

What I have so far is a Charles woods Curtis was on the 1911 census living in Cheltenham. I can see a Charles W Curtis on the GRO index died in Cheltenham 1st quarter 1915. As he was born in Leicestershire, I have had a look on the parish records on familysearch, and a burial is recorded at tilton on the hill on January 19th 1915. Tilton village website has a date of death as January 13th 1915, but has death at Halstead (next door village to tilton).

Any suggestions

The death should be registered in the Registration District it took place in.

Halstead Leics is in Billesden Reg District.

MAybe he died in Cheltenham, body was brought back for burial in Tilton, but the person dealing with it was from Halstead, so the body and funeral procession etc actually came from Halstead parish. The vicar made the assumption he had died there.

How would you go about finding info?

Get the GRO certificate which will help with cause of death and perhaps name a relative, occupation etc to confirm it's the right one.

Get the burial record if possible, rather than relying on a transcription, to check the age and any other details match the person you're after.  And that it actually is a burial record rather than an MI from a church yard which doesn't necessarily mean he was buried there, just that his name appears on a grave stone or other memorial.

But as liz says the body may have been  "brought back" from Cheltenham to the home parish to be buried with family.

The burial record is from the parish records on family search and I believe it's the same as records on Findmypast.

I was wondering how easy would it have been to move the body and would there be any record of the movement.

Makes no difference what website it was on - have you seen the original image, or was it just a transcription?

It is not particularly unusual to bring a body back to bury with or near family.

As to how easy to move body - well , body is in coffin. Coffin is transported either in motor hearse or horse drawn cart depending on the era!

Could also have been transported by train.
I have an ancestor who died in Yorkshire and was buried in Somerset, before motorised transport so I assume that the coffin went by rail rather than horse and cart.

Is there a newspaper obituary that might give some more detail.

More extensive railway network a century ago. Small towns and some villages had stations. Hearse may not have had far to travel to & fro station.
Someone on RC told of sitting on what he thought was a large box on a station platform only to find it was a coffin.
