Great Longstone Marriages
« on: Thursday 23 August 18 17:23 BST (UK) »
I have two Marriages by Licence at the above Church.  1762 and 1803.  They do not appear in either the Lichfield & Coventry Diocese or the York Diocese lists of Marriage Bonds and Allegations.  Any suggestions very welcome.

The lists for Marriage Bonds are not comprehensive but are usually for those Bonds which are still in existence. It is highly possible that the ones you are looking for haven't survived the years for whatever reason.

Apologies for the delay, my phone line has been on the blink and that means no ADSL either.

Goldie61 - I hadn't thought of that; my information was from the Parish Register transcription and it is quite feasible that the original licence no longer exists.  Well made point - thank you.

Emeltom - I'm really scratching around looking for a scrap of information to tie together some of the many separate Gregory records in the Derbyshire area in that period.  The two particular records are:  Hannah Gregory married Francis Orr on 6 January 1803 and William Gregory married Ann Smith on 17 October 1762.  The Parish Register states they married by Licence but I can't find the Licence.  Thanks for any help you can offer.

Some while back a kind person told me that Bakewell parish (around 18th century) could not make up it's mind which diocese it belonged in.  I have searched my back correspondence but could not locate the reference.  I have an idea that for a while Bakewell was not in either York, or Lichfield and Coventry Diocese, but I have not found any information on the subject.

Many thanks - Alex Edge

Hello,

Parish of Bakewell was in diocese of Lichfield.

Assume you are searching on FindMyPast for marriage bonds, in the  Staffordshire, Diocese of Lichfield & Coventry marriage allegations and bonds, 1636-1893  if you enter Bakewell in search box and no other info you
Will get results.  Unfortunately the 2 marriages you quote are not listed.

However the images of your 2 marriages are available on Ancestry.

Apologies for the delay, my ADSL line has been down for the past nine days.  Repaired this am.  Thanks to everyone for their help with my query.  I will try Ancestry again.

I am very interested in the research you have been doing on the Gregorys. I am embarking on the same journey and believe we have the same ancestors. I would be grateful if you could get in touch
