Newhaven Funeral Books 1830-1839: Compiled by John Stevenson and Ramsay Tubb this booklet with over thirty pages of names, begins at Martinmas (mid November) 1830 when the office bearers of the Society of Free Fishermen of Newhaven were elected. There are 240 names on the list showing four payments of 6d (old pence) each. Twenty-two of these are noted as dead. Based on the above figures, the Society collected around £22, which would be worth over £1,000 today. There are a further nine similar lists in the publication going up to 1839/41. In the 19th Century, the Society identified married fishermen by incorporating their wife’s maiden surname. Unmarried fishermen were identified by noting the father’s forename or mother’s maiden surname, making identification of the individuals easier. This publication is available from our website at a price of £3.00 plus p&p https://shop.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/2018-August.html.
